Friends, Family and Building Clientele

My family and friends were a support system,

Not a consistent one though which is unfortunate.

They didn’t support me the way I thought,

With expectations, comes disappointments.

The push to build a solid clientele was challenging,

There were avenues I could go down but I had to decide if it was worth it.

It would be costly to invest into ads on the internet,

I thought that the people in my neighborhood would see a new business and would want to know about it.

I felt like if it wasn’t a fast food spot they can try,

They didn’t want to be bothered with it.

My investors would bring people to the shop from time to time,

That was just a temporary and momentary ordeal of making some decent money.

Marketing was my focus and I decided to have an event at the juice shop,

With my shop having opened in the summer months, that was my advantage.

It would be a juice tasting event and set prices for certain sizes,

I put in an ad for the local newspaper in Alphabet City, hopefully that will draw people in.

When the event happened, it turned out well, I had a good customer base for that day,

A lot of people didn’t know about my juice shop since they lived further away in Alphabet City.

That was a good day but I knew that it was still going to be an uphill climb,

Especially when people see you in the community as the nurse in the ER and not a businesswoman with a juice shop.

My healthy family members which were my cousins,

Getting them to post my flyers around the neighborhood was a battle in itself.

It was like prying teeth out of their mouths to help me,

This was supposed to be my biggest support system and they barely did anything to help.

Everyday was a grind to get consistency in my business,

It was a lot of driving home in deep thought about my shop.

Long showers of uncertainty and questioning myself,

Nights laying in bed crying and asking what is it going to take?

It’s a fight to win over a neighborhood who knows nothing about my juice shop,

Along with knowing what’s in front of them, fast food restaurants and living life on the go.

I started thinking to myself, how do I galvanize a community?

Where people want to get a juice shake from time to time and they become a consistent customer base?

I knew nothing was going to come easy but this is harder than I envisioned,

With no major help, it was a fight everyday to win the people in my community.

I thought the summer months would be good for the start of my business,

It was a summer of struggle, violence and killing and constantly figuring out what’s next…
