My Kids Are Fighting To Survive
Jermaine and Shameka were rushed into surgery,
Trying to fill out paperwork for the both of them was impossible.
My memory wasnât there, I had lost my train of thought so many times,
I had to ask the registrar to repeat her questions multiple times.
I kept apologizing for spacing out as I was lost in my own world,
Thinking of the worst case scenarios that could potentially happen.
Jermaine lives and canât walk anymore and Shameka dies,
Or Shameka makes it and Jermaine doesnât make it.
Then I thought of they both make it but Jermaine is paralyzed for life,
He wonât be able to walk ever again and that changes his whole life.
I had to get out of my head and fill out the paperwork,
So the registrar can put it in the system for their records.
She needed my insurance card, thankfully I had it on me,
I didnât remember the member ID number for my insurance carrier.
My kids were fighting to survive and I felt so guilty for not protecting them,
There wasnât much I could do, the shootout just suddenly happened.
I didnât have time to tell my kids to get down or get behind a car,
I was looking to see where the bullets were coming from and they were coming from all different directions.
My kids have seen and dealt with so much in their childhood,
I know they never thought theyâd see the day where bullets would hit them in the neighborhood theyâve grown up in.
Scary for them but also for me in so many ways,
Sadly theyâve lost classmates to shootings in the neighborhood.
It impacts you in many ways but you donât think it would happen to you,
You prepare for it and even when you do, youâre still hit with a bullet.
Iâd spend most of my night in the hospital with groceries by my side,
Sitting in the waiting room alone, sad, crying and making so many phone calls to family members.
They were all ready to book flights to come my way to help me,
So many aunts, uncles and cousins were all scared and terrified of what happened.
I remember after the phone calls sitting the hospital waiting room feeling a numbness inside of me,
Trying to process what happened and feeling so helpless.
For years, my childrenâs lives were depended on me and what I did,
Now I sit here forced to put my life in the hands of doctors and surgeons.
You never think that would ever happen to your children,
It crosses your mind living in Alphabet City but you never think it will come to fruition.
It would be an agonizing four hours before I heard about Shameka,
Then add an additional four hours for a total of eight hours before I knew of Jermaineâs status.
Shamekaâs status was good to hear that sheâll be okay,
That sheâll deal with a lot of pain for the next few weeks but to take things slow with her.
Her being shot in the stomach will affect her eating and how digestion happens,
Itâll be a lot of light food, nothing too solid and hard to digest.
