Xavier-Children/Women

The amount of domestic violence and child neglect cases we have had the past few years,

Has been nothing short of concerning for me as a police officer and detective.

While I’d love to sit in the police commissioner’s office and discuss these things,

I have a job to do and felt it was best to be in this space to speak on it.

The amount of domestic violence cases where women aren’t protected is concerning,

A piece of paper from the courts will not keep a lot of men away.

The question becomes, how do we go about protecting women better?

Maybe giving abusers ankle bracelets to track their location.

I don’t have the solutions but I want to start the conversations,

As I don’t want to walk into buildings and apartments to see a dead woman laying in blood.

I don’t want to see abused children crying for their mothers,

Having to call an ambulance to get women and their children treatment.

As a detective, while we can’t prevent all crime from happening,

Something has to give and outlets need to be provided to women with children who need help.

We need to also provide women outlets to get out of their situations,

Especially if they want and need it and we have the ability to do it.

We need to incarcerate abusive men no matter the circumstance,

Which means tougher laws on abusive men whether it’s mental, physical or emotional abuse.

We can’t keep continuing to see death knocking at our police headquarters doors,

Before we start working on instituting tougher laws to protect women and children.

Men get abused too and it’s not to absolve them from the situation at hand,

They need outlets themselves so I don’t want to dehumanize or devalue men who are or have experienced abuse in their lives.

We also need to provide comfort and safety for women that prevent harassment,

They should be able to walk comfortably through their neighborhood without being catcalled or bothered.

We need community leaders and organizers to be on the lookout for these situations,

A need for people to step to the plate and protect those around us.

This needs to be a constant topic of discussion to change things,

Whether it’s laws, communication with women and children and even having our community involved more.

We as police officers and detectives can’t be around all of the time,

But there has to be ways to keep women protected from domestic violence.

There has to be more ways to make sure children are being raised correctly,

It’s going to take more hands on deck to make Alphabet City safer.

As a police detective, I’m willing to create a board where we can discuss this further,

And even looking to have a special unit in our police department dedicated to the women and children of our community.

While it would take more money in the police budget,

Along with resources, training and reviewing previous cases, I feel and believe it can be done.

There are children in need of better living situations,

But we stick them in foster care and not cater to their mental health first.

We need to protect children from abuse, neglect
