Nineteen

The side-by-side dripped on the concrete. Rok and the others stood around it, silent.

Hammer spoke first. “He was an ornery old bastard, but a hard worker.”

At that they all nodded.

“That man always came home with at least one grouse.” Usually a few good-sized ones.

“Remember how he called Asher the man whore.”

Said man whore uttered a noise. “Treated me like a son, he did.”

All of their heads drooped, paying their respects to one who’d passed on.

Now, time to figure out what killed him. Darian hadn’t said shit when he called. Just the basics. Found Wallace. Bringing him home.

Which meant he thought there was something fishy.

Everyone was in the garage with the exception of Poppy, Astra, and Meadow. Nova undid the knots while Darian paced. Reece and Gary stood side by side and silent. Bellamy readied his tools to examine the body.

With the bindings undone, Rok and Hammer carried Wallace into the workshop area of the garage. The man felt lighter than he should.

“Is it me, or has he lost weight?” The Wallace he knew carried a few extra pounds.

“Animals got to him.” Hammer replied.

Rok wasn’t alone in wincing. Hopefully the chewing happened well after Wallace died. “You think there’s something hinky about his death.”

“I know there is,” Darian confirmed. “But rather than give you some half-baked shit, I want to see what Bellamy says.”

Bellamy took a breath before peeling back the tarp wrapping the body. Nova acted as his assistant as Bellamy studied the corpse. Too small. Too dead.

Fuck.

Rok shoved away from the vehicle and headed for the propane fridge with the beers inside. It was noon somewhere in the world. He handed one to Darian and another to Hammer. Reece shook his head and ran from the garage, Gary following. The man didn’t do well with death.

Asher also declined. “I’m going to check on the girls in the house.”

Rok almost said no. He didn’t want pretty boy near Meadow, but if Wallace had been killed… Better the women have protection until they had a handle on the situation. “Stay with them.”

“I’ll go, too. I don’t need to see this twice.” Hammer left with Asher.

Rok turned to Darian. “Tell me everything,”

Clearly shaken, Darren spread his hands. “We found him by accident. Just beyond the border, crammed inside a rock cairn. Might not have found him at all if not for the mudslide. It sheared some of the stone, exposing him.”

“Wait, he was buried?”

“Seems like. Those stones were stacked to block the crevice they stuffed him in. We dug Wallace out and brought him home.”

“You should have called me sooner,” he growled.

“To do what? Besides, you were busy.”

He had been. He rubbed the spot between his brows. “You’re sure the body you brought back was Wallace?” Because he’d looked at what remained and had a hard time seeing it.

Darian nodded. “Face is mangled, but you can still see the tattoo on his arm. And he was wearing the shirt Poppy fixed for him.”

“Someone buried the body to hide it. Did they kill him?”

“Not sure how he died.
