Chapter Sixteen

Katie

I’ve had enough of this freezing, ice land where I can rarely feel my hands, let alone my entire body. I miss Terran with a deep, soulful ache: even the days Killian and I maybe weren’t doing our best, but at least we were there together, sharing a room, a bed. Even sharing arguments as all couples do.

This? I kick at the snow, which is like kicking a white, fluffy wall. I hate this. The freezing loneliness of being without my mate, a shower, a warm bed. I glare at it until my flames lick at the snow, but even my fire barely puts a dent in the seemingly infinite blanket of ridiculous, white mush.

I’m not the only one truly fed up with our journey, so we made the unanimous decision to run, at intervals, as our wolves, to get there faster, even though the cost is that it’s harder to pause and navigate. Our wolves want to howl, potentially alerting anyone around to our presence, to hunt and kill, and to go find our mates. Well, those of us who have them, but no need to rub that in to Ivy.

As a result of our hastened journey, we should be approaching the Ventalis border right about now.

Ivy’s map depicts a line as the border, which makes sense, but we have no idea what the border itself will consist of. A Glowy Wall of Death meant to blast us all to hell if we try to enter? Or a line of Air Pack wolves ready to rip the air from our lungs upon approach? Maybe a hurricane sent to rip us limb from limb. We have no idea. This is the fun part. Basically the entire reason we’ve had to put up with Ivy. She’s powerful. If they make a show of force before we can tell them to chill—no pun intended—then she can protect us.

Or, she’d better, or I’ve put up with her for no reason.

As we approach the expanse of land which should hold the barrier, we frown, a collective rumpling of brows at the, well... nothing. Total lack of… anything. Glowy, deathy, or otherwise. We exchange confused glances.

Ivy steps forward, hand outstretched, glowing with her Starlight heat, testing the border.

‘Maybe no one’s visited in a long time,’ Ella suggests, ‘so they don’t bother guarding it?’

‘Who would ever risk leaving their borders unguarded?’ Ivy asks, her voice sharp.

My jaw clenches. I hate it when she talks to Ella like she’s an idiot. It makes me want to—a loud whip of wind makes me snap my gaze from Ella to the border. A tornado spins just before us.

Ivy takes a step back, but no more. ‘Stay behind me.’ She raises her hand, calling into the wind. ‘We’re here as friends, not foes. We come in peace.’

A part of my brain laughs at the ridiculous words, we come in peace. I don’t think Air Pack have been at peace with anyone for generations. There’s nothing stopping them from wind-whipping our heads clean off.
