Shon wandered into the diner, ready to just have a cup of coffee and maybe get some words on the page. He’d brought his laptop with him because the cabin smelled like Brendan. And sex. Even two days later. He couldn’t concentrate.

He grabbed the best booth, his back to the wall, the view out the windows perfect. He would see anyone coming, though here in Grimm town the worst he had to avoid was the old man coffee klatch.

“Hey, Shon!” Tate, wearing an apron over his t-shirt and jeans, arrived to hand him a cup of hot water and a bunch of tea bags. “How are you doing today?”

“Great.” He was, in fact, feeling amazing. He hadn’t gotten to see Brendan too much in the last day or so, but he was still glowing from their amazing night.”

“Awesome. The special this morning is pineapple and coconut pancakes.”

“Uh. Do you have cinnamon rolls?”

“We do. Bacon?”

He nodded happily. “Yes. Please.”

“I’m on it. Holler if you need me.”

“Sure. Hey, Tate? Why are you waiting tables?”

“Oh there were a couple of big old dudes in here yesterday bothering Mairi. Out of towners. She asked if I would come in case they came back.” Tate shrugged and headed back to the kitchen.

Shon immediately peered out the window. Now, he knew other people could be passing through just as he’d been, but what if the city boys were still chasing him like he’d told Brendan? He’d really fucked up there, and had left the DC metro in a huge hurry, sneaking out like a thief in the night. God save him from political wolves and their dislike for suspense books based on them…

They could just be so sensitive.

He didn’t see anyone outside, but even when he opened his laptop he couldn’t concentrate again, for a very different reason.

Mairi brought him his food, her ankle bells warning him she was coming. “Hey, Shon. Cinnamon roll and extra bacon, because I made it too crispy for the pasta later today.”

“No such thing as too crispy.” God, the smelled like heaven.

“Right.” She leaned down, one hand on his table. “Tate told you about those guys yesterday?”

“Yeah?” His heart kicked into double time. Shit.

“They were asking about you. Not by name, mind, but it has to be you. Black hair, green eyes, always carrying a laptop bag.”

Shon swallowed hard. Shit. Any number of enforcers could be looking for him, but he would put money on DC. “And what did you tell them?”

She raised a dark red eyebrow. “That I’d never seen you. Now, I can’t speak for the older folks who love to gossip. You know how it is around here. Words spreads like wildfire.”

He nodded slowly. “Thanks.”

“You’re one of us.” Simple words, but they tamped right down on Shon’s first instinct, which was to run. Just pack his shit and go.

The phrase, “You’re one of us,” had never been uttered by someone in reference to Shon and a pack, though. And what about Brendan? Shon couldn’t just leave him. Not when things were going so well.
