Twenty-Three (Remy)

Bastien gave me a good fight. He made sure I believed I won fair and square.

I stood over him, gasping and holding on to my bleeding arm, ready to blast him again with another deadly spell. But he wasn’t moving. His breathing seemed to have stopped. Once I caught my own breath, I intended to bend down to check. I wanted to make certain that once he was dead, he was dead.

That was when the sanctuary room filled with guards. I stopped counting at a dozen. All of them carried stunner rods like those used in the City. I noted a few Fae in the mix, along with the expected Witches. I wasn’t certain of the others, but I suspected that they were Wolves who’d turned traitor from the Grimfur clan after their corrupt Alpha Prime had been killed by his heir Conner a few months back.

None of that information helped me though. None of it made it possible for me to escape now that I’d done the one thing that could not be tolerated in the Covens. I murdered the High Priest. My plan had been to do the deed and escape the Coven lands with Lux. I had hoped to talk Locke into coming back to the Grimfur lands with me where we could live safe and protected in the village where Conner and Nova ruled.

In retrospect, I should have known what a stupid plan that was. Bastien might have been alone inside the sanctuary itself but I should have known that his retinue of guards were nearby. They hadn’t rushed in while we were fighting because no one who wanted to survive got in the middle of a Witch fight.

Once Bastien was down and I was a murderer, they were free to enter the holy space and deal with me. I was too tired from my fight to cast another spell. Even the simple shadow cloak spell was too much right now. And it would do me little good with all those eyes staring at me. They might lose sight of me, but their spells and weapons could still find me.

I didn’t see where the first stunner rod came from, but they hit me with the enchanted crystals over and over again. I was writhing in pain when I finally, mercifully passed out.

The last thing I saw was Bastien sitting up with the help of one of the guards.

When I came to some time later, tucked up tight in a dark cell somewhere in the main temple, I wasn’t entirely certain of what I’d seen. I had hit him with every spell I knew. One of the lightning strikes went right through his chest. There was no way Bastien was still alive. I had to be mistaken.

If he were dead, then I could accept my fate. I would stand trial and air the reasons why I did what I did. Without him still among the living, I could acknowledge Tessa as my child and she would inherit what little I had to give.
