Emma admires Megan’s skills at juggling as she handles a mug of hot chocolate, a pastry, and a snoozing Ethan without spilling anything. Having a snoring cub in one arm has slowed her down so Emma polished off several pastries before Megan’s finished even one. Thankfully there’s plenty more.

Unlike Franco who yells at her when she wanders into his kitchen looking for a snack, Kieran, the Olsen Sleuth chef made them welcome and even put together several plates of treats as well as serving up the best hot chocolate Emma’s ever had.

With Ethan asleep, Megan gives Emma more details on their current issues.

“Alpha Donal sent formal requests for them to stay away and even filed grievances with the local authorities,” Megan explains, making Emma snort with derision.

“Like the human authorities care about what happens to shifters,” Emma mutters. “They’d only care about a bunch of blood witches if they started killing humans instead of shifters.”

“Yeah, that didn’t do any good,” Megan agrees. “But at least it’s on the books that we tried to do this peacefully. The attack on Ethan was really the last straw. They want a young shifter for their magic, and nothing we’ve done has kept them away. We could lock the cubs up in the house, but that’s no way to live.”

“No,” agrees Emma. “Shifters can’t live like that, especially young ones. So, your last resort was to call in Kade?”

“He’s our second to last resort. If his wards don’t work, then we’ll go to war with the blood witches. Hunt them down one by one and wipe them out,” Megan explains grimly. “We discussed moving, but that would make us look weak and draw other blood magic witches to prey on us.”

Although she’s never had to deal with blood witches, Emma understands the importance of being thought of as strong in the magical world. Those that are perceived as weak are prey. Being prey never ends well.

Unaware of Emma’s snooping in Ethan’s mind, Megan tells her about the attack on the cub’s parents. It happened only the day before Donal contacted Kade. It’s that attack that pushed Donal into trying out Kade’s wards. That made him willing to pay exorbitant amounts to get the mage to North Dakota on such short notice.

That makes Emma curious about the Olsen Sleuths’ finances. “How can you guys afford Kade? He told me how much he’s charging. I’ve got to be honest. My old Pack wouldn’t ever have been able to pay that.”

“Oh, our Sleuth is rich,” Megan explains blithely. “We created and maintain AltShifter.”

Emma knows her mouth is gaping open, but she can’t seem to control it. AltShifter started out as a website for all things shifter, now it’s the premier website for all magical creatures. Anything you might need to buy, know, or find is on AltShifter. Even Emma, who’s never been particularly into social media or buying items online, uses AltShifter. Several other websites have tried to copy its success, but none are even close. One wolf called it Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, Wikipedia, and Alibaba all rolled into one.
