CHAPTER THIRTEEN

VELLA

Vella felt her heart pound, watching Fox disappear into the crowd of frantic humans.

Fuck!

She pushed her way through the mobbed bodies, growling loudly when she was shoved back even farther.

“Fucking humans!”

There was no way she was getting through this thicket, especially with everyone panicking. She needed to find Fox and take him somewhere safe before anything bad happened. He didn’t have enough muscles on him to fend off this many bodies.

She shifted, making people around her scream in terror at her size. Her hybrid form was a lot bigger than her usual bat form, making her appear to be some kind of giant, mutant version. She catapulted herself up into the sky, flapping around and screeching out an echolocation at the crowd.

Where is he? There are so many people…

Her screech bounced off a form on the ground, not moving and currently being stepped all over.

No!

Tucking her wings in tight, Vella dove at the body on the ground, Fox’s scent immediately hitting her. He had to be bleeding if his scent was this strong. Her heart pounded at the thought.

Landing on his back, she gripped her feet around what was left of his shirt and hauled him into the air. He dangled lifelessly, his head lolling to the side like a ragdoll’s.

Vella flapped her wings hard, the muscles straining with her efforts. She needed to find somewhere to land to assess how badly he was hurt. There was no way she could fly him all the way over to the hospital across the city in time. Not with his scent permeating the air so thickly.

Spotting a nearby rooftop, Vella headed for it. She set Fox’s body down as gently as she could and immediately shifted.

“Oh, my god, Fox!”

She knelt and put her hands over the stab wound just below his ribcage, feeling his hot blood pouring out of him and coating her fingers. She could feel the hysteria working its way up her throat, clawing to get out the more she tried to push it down.

It can’t end like this. He can’t leave me like this!

“Fox!” she screamed again, putting as much body weight onto the wound as she could.

The rest of him was in poor shape too. His clothes were completely shredded by all of the people stepping and tripping over him. Bruises littered his arms in strange wavey patterns from the treads on the bottom of people’s shoes.

It made bile rise in her throat. She had no phone to call anyone. No one was around to see what happened.

Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck!

Vella shook her head quickly. She needed to focus and stop panicking. He was only going to die faster if she kept freaking out like this.

Taking a few calming breaths, Vella looked down at the stab wound that was still bleeding. This was going to be the biggest problem. She needed to get this situated as best as she could so that he would have at least a fighting chance to make it while she carried him across the city.
