Chapter 12

***Chuck***

My body racked by intense pain, I struggled to get out of the crunched Ford, steam billowing from the busted radiator. The hood had crumpled in, the driver’s door both crushed and flat against the side of the building I’d hit. I crawled across the seat to open the passenger door, then slowly stood up.

Sirens in the distance announced the approach of the cops. Shit. I held my injured and bleeding left arm with my right hand, trying to shake off the shock of the sudden impact with an immovable object. Cars stopped, traffic crawled around them as people approached me with concern.

“Are you okay, man?” asked a kid who stepped off a motorcycle.

My head still dazed, my instincts kicked in to compensate. I couldn’t let the cops find me here. Not only did I have outstanding warrants, but if they busted me, my entire operation might collapse. I’d be in prison until I turned ninety.

If I lived that long.

The sirens drew closer. More people closed in around me, asking questions. Are you hurt? How did this happen? Want me to call for an ambulance? Adrenaline kicked in. My pain receded.

Pushing my way through the small crowd, I headed down the alley as fast as I could go. I shot a glance over my shoulder to see if anyone followed. None did, but many pairs of eyes watched me flee. Got to get out of here. They’ll point out to the cops which way I went.

Hitting the next street, I jogged down the sidewalk for a couple of blocks, then went down another alley. My breathing came harsh and ragged, and black spots danced in my eyes. I pushed on, zigzagging my way down alleys and side streets, putting distance between me and the police. The Ford wasn’t in my name but had my fingerprints all over it.

It’s that dragon’s fault.

Sweat stung my eyes. Now gasping, feeling like I would pass out at any second, I stopped to rest. Drawing in one painful breath after another, I glanced around for signs the cops had found me. Traffic passed by on the busy street a few yards away, but no police cruisers suddenly jerked to a stop in the alley, lights flashing.

Feeling slightly stronger, yet my pain intensifying, I pulled my cell from my pocket. One-handed, I clicked Ace’s number and held the phone to my ear. As it rang, I continued to look for any indication I’d been made.

“Pick up,” I moaned. “Pick up, damn it.”

“’Lo?”

“Ace,” I choked. “Come get me.”

“Chuck? Where are you? I’m getting the gun like you said.”

“Forget the fucking gun,” I snarled. “I’m on Eighth Avenue, a half a block down from Main. In the alley.”

“You okay, dude? You sound strange.”

“I’m hurt. Crashed the car. The cops are looking for me.”

“Cops? Why are the cops looking for you?”

Ace’s voice sounded scared. For a moment, it occurred to me that this was Ace’s chance to escape me. If he chose to run, I sure as shit couldn’t chase him down.
