Chapter Twelve

Sarina didn’t argue when her father asked that she and Brody keep the twins in the house and stay over for a while. She knew he worried about Lilith and Fenris attacking again in their anger. He’d bought and erected massive tents to house the entire Delta pack on the land his father had owned before they’d expanded; the Radiants had also worked together to make a force field around the encampment. As long as one of them was awake, the protection surrounding them would hold, so they took turns sleeping.

“You look tired,” Amanda said as Sarina came into the kitchen.

“I’m exhausted, but more so emotionally than physically,” she sighed. Opening the fridge, she pulled out a piece of double chocolate fudge cake she’d saved from dinner.

“Wanna talk about it?”

Sarina smiled. She’d always been able to tell her mother anything without fear of being judged for it. “Brody wants to be intimate and I’m afraid, terribly afraid, that I can’t give him what he needs.” Sarina waited for her mother to interrupt and when she didn’t, Sarina continued. “When the boys went missing, something changed inside of me. I’m not the woman I was before they were kidnapped. Even inside of myself I feel hard, as if all the soft places turned to stone so that I’d be able to deal with the aftermath if that bitch had hurt them. Now I can’t seem to soften any of those places again, not even for Brody.”

“You two need time together,” Amanda said, her green eyes so like Sarina’s. “Take this and find your mate. I promise it’ll help you find your center.”

Sarina looked at the key in her mother’s hand. “What is it?”

“It unlocks a door that no one, until now, has known about. Both you and Brody need to find what you lost when your sons were kidnapped. I made this special place when Jason was killed because I was losing myself as well. Your father will use it soon too, but tonight, you and Brody need it. And don’t worry about the boys. Shawna is watching them and our whole pack is here. Take tonight, Sarina, so that you’ll have a tomorrow to look forward to.”

Sarina did as her mother said and found Brody sitting in the family room, sipping scotch. Grabbing his hand, she put his scotch down and pulled him up with her. She turned and tucking his hand in hers, let the key lead her where they needed to go. “What’s up?” he asked, curiosity in his voice.

“We’re going to find ourselves,” was all Sarina said as the key warmed in her hand. Finding a beautifully carved door in a recessed wall of the basement, Sarina stuck the key in. The door opened without further provocation and both Sarina and Brody stepped into a radiant and breathtaking light.

“Welcome,” came a voice Sarina recognized. She looked up to see the woman from her dreams in what seemed like ages ago. She’d been in the grips of terrible evil when this beautifully stunning woman had given her three realities to choose from.
