Leah walked into the banquet hall to check on the set up for the Akoni family reunion luncheon. The tables were set with alternating green and yellow table clothes and similar cloth napkins. At the center of each was a single glass vase with woven lauhala around it, adding more green color to the room, and which would soon sport bright yellow orchids.
Immediately, the memory of her and Cord having a picnic lunch under those trees on Pono Ranch surfaced. Her whole body warmed as she remembered his smile. Even yesterday afternoon sheâd basked in that smile once theyâd made it through her confession. She trusted him with her secret here on Momi, and it didnât really matter if he told anyone in Arizona because her life there was over.
On that thought, she glanced at the clock on the wall and quickly moved to the back doors. The flowers should be arriving any moment. Her staff were busy putting the final touches on the room, so she opened the double doors at the back only to discover Cord and Phil standing outside.
âLeah.â He grinned. âI was just telling Phil about how you had an event today and I wouldnât get to see you.â
âIt was more a complaint than a telling.â Phil rolled his eyes, finally seeming somewhat human to her.
She could feel her cheeks warm at his statement. âWell, here I am getting ready for a big family reunion.â She refocused her gaze a Cord. âWhat are you doing back here. You have a dive soon.â She looked past him. âThey should be here any minute.â
He chuckled. âYes, we know, but Phil didnât want his lady friends to know, so he sneaked away early and called me from his hiding place here to keep him company until the van arrived.â
She turned to look through the banquet hall windows at the other end of the room and could see the pool crowd meandering a bit. All except Diedre, who had the attention of her two favorite island men. âI think theyâre getting restless.â She turned back to the men to find Cord whipping his gaze up to meet hers. Was he checking out her butt?
Ignoring the thrill that gave her, she glanced down the drive again, now looking both for his van and her flowers. âIâm sure your ride will be her soon.â
âI donât mind waiting.â Cord raised his brows, hopefully. âAre you sure you canât join us?â
She looked at Phil who just shook his head. âCord, as you can see Iâm working. Besides I never learned to scuba dive in the desert of Arizona.â
Phil chuckled. âOui, mon ami. Not everyone spends their college years on a beautiful Caribbean island.â
âAnd not everyone gets to grow up on one in the luxury of royalty.â
She snapped her gaze to Phil who frowned at Cord. Oh boy. She wasnât supposed to know that.
Cord appeared contrite. âIâm sorry, Phil. Iâm so comfortable around Leah, I didnât think.â
She hastened to assure Phil. âI promise not to say a word to anyone, especially Diedre.
