5. Corporatist coalitions in Iran

This section explores the drivers behind coalition-formation between corporatist student and labour unions 1990s and early 2000s Iran, and the ways in which such coalitions contributed to the opening up of politics and the inclusion of a broader set of civil society actors. My empirical material for this study is based on archival research and fieldwork in Iran, conducted during two visits in 2015 and late 2016- early 2017. In addition to secondary sources, I conducted interviews with current and former representatives and lawyers of the main labour and journalist unions. I also conducted a systematic analysis of union publications, government bills and newspapers, especially Kar va Kargar, the official daily of the main labour union.
