THE INCREDIBLE MACHINE
14 The Incredible Machine
If I asked you to hold up your left hand, you might pause for a second before deciding which hand was your left, but few would describe that as a particularly complicated feat. In fact you could train most dogs to do it. However, imagine your task was to get every one of the millions of people that inhabit the earth to hold up their left hands simultaneously. Even with modern communications your chances of success would be infinitesimal. Yet that is virtually what is happening every time you perform the simplest of tasks like subconsciously scratching your nose.
Your body is comprised of trillions of cells, each cell a separate entity, yet all working in complete cohesion with the others throughout your life. Do you think you could peel apples, read your newspaper, play cards and answer the telephone? Of course you could â none of those tasks is particularly complicated. But would you complete one of those tasks efficiently if you attempted to do them all at the same time?
We are fully aware of the incredible skills that certain human beings achieve in activities such as sports, music, sculpture, painting, etc., but those trillions of cells that make up our bodies undertake not just one simple task, but dozens of incredibly complicated tasks at one and the same time throughout our lives.
Whether you are awake or asleep, your lungs continue to breathe in oxygen and your heart continues to pump that oxygen and other chemicals through the circulatory system to the part of the body that requires them. Your internal thermostat continues to keep your body temperature at the required level. Your body continues to digest food, assimilate the necessary fuel and nutrients and process the waste products without your having to wake up in the proverbial. Your immune system fights a constant battle to overcome injury and infection.
The problem is, because these functions are automatic and require no conscious effort on our part, we tend to take them for granted. Although it is not necessary for you to understand the technical details, it is important that you are consciously aware of the incredible strength and sophistication of the human body.
But mankind did not create itself. Nor did man create a single living creature on this planet. If man did not create himself, then God or some other intelligence did. For convenience, Iâll refer to that intelligence as the Creator. (Personally, I find it difficult to believe that the Creator is an old man with a long white beard, who is permanently observing and judging me.)
The fact that I refer to him in the masculine gender might imply that I believe him to be of human form and male. To me that would be about as logical as a computer that was sophisticated enough to contemplate its creator, assuming that mankind was shaped like a computer and that just one genderless human being created all computers and everything else in the universe. I refer to the Creator in the male gender because I donât know how else to refer to him.
