But what? When are you coming back? Chris is busy boxing, he ainât thinking about you no more,â I pleaded.
âIt ainât Chris Iâm worried about. Itâs Derrek. Heâ¦â âHe what?â I asked.
âHe asked me to marry him,â Tina said timidly. âWhat? Marry him? Whatever!â
âIâm serious, Celess.â
âAnd did he give you a one-way ticket back home when you said no?â
âI didnât say no.â
âWhat? So you are going to marry him?â âYes.â
I was surprised and mad at the same time. I think deep down inside I knew if Tina married Derrek she would definitely not come back to Philly, and that would hurt my heart. I mean, Tina was all I really had. She was my friend and my family.
âSo when is this supposed to happen?â âWe didnât set a date yet, but soon.â âUm, um, umâ¦â
âYou mad?â Tina asked. She must have sensed it. âNo,â I lied. âIf youâre happy, Iâm happy.â
Tina knew I was bullshittinâ. She started explaining herself.
âIâm just tired of playing the game, you know?â she said. âDerrek is perfect for me. He knows everything about me already and heâs cool with it. Plus he got plenty dough and I know Iâm safe with him. I can just chill. My worries are over with himâall of them, you know?â
As much as I hated to admit it, Tina was right. Derrek was her best bet. I was just jealous and lonely at that time. I was feeling left out. I mean, Tina introduced to me this game of dressing up and having dudes thinking Iâm a chick, taking care of me. And now it would be like I was out here alone playing by myself.
âWell?â Tina asked, interrupting my thoughts. âWell, what?â
âAre you still mad?â
I thought about her question and I realized that if the shoe was on the other foot, if somebody who knew all about me, who could take care of me, and who I was attracted to offered to take me away from all the stress and bullshit of going from man to man, I would take him up on it.
âNo, girl, Iâm not still mad,â I said sincerely. âI just canât believe it. Tina getting married?â I pondered aloud.
âI know, right. It sounds crazy, but itâs the best thing to do. I would be a damn fool to say no.â
âYouâre right and Iâm happy for you, for real,â I said with tears in my eyes.
The clock said eight twenty-five. I turned over in my bed and reached for my ringing phone, wondering who could be calling me this early on a Monday.
âHello,â I said, sounding like I had swallowed a mouthful of sand.
âHello, may I speak with Celess?â
I sat up, trying to figure out who the voice on the other end of the phone belonged to.
âWhoâs calling?â I asked, praying it wasnât any bill collectors.
âThis is Rachel Greene, Darrellâs wife,â she answered. I took a breath. âWhat can I do for you?â
âI am so sorry to wake you. Darrell just left for work.
