CHAPTER 23—JEALOUS

The sun beats down mercilessly, casting long, menacing shadows on the beach as those idiots finally connect some of the dots on my phone.

Their inflated sense of achievement is almost laughable, their faces lighting up as though they've discovered the secret to immortality.

Rolling my eyes, I stifle a chuckle, the sound swallowed up by the cacophony of beachgoers around me.

The salty air, thick with sunscreen and the tang of the ocean, fills my lungs. My feet sink into the warm sand.

Sure, they know. Or rather, they think they do. Their complacency is my weapon. A weapon I've crafted carefully, refining it with each passing day, each new discovery.

Another chuckles claws its way out as I listen to their discussion.

The way Jennie doubts Gabriel? I’m loving every second. And the seeds of doubt will grow when they find no spyware on their devices.

Because they won't.

I've ensured it's spotless.

For now.

And their PI is losing sight of the bigger picture. For instance, she hasn't discovered the microphones and tiny cameras I strategically planted in their cars over spring break. The stream of data I've harvested since then has been more than helpful.

It's been enlightening.

With a swift movement, I stow away my earbuds, nearly avoiding a group of kids rushing to the beach. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Sunset Cove swells with visitors from across the nation and around the globe. They're here to enjoy summer memories in a place that, for others, is home.

Like Gabriel and Jennie.

Like me.

A smile tugs at the corner of my mouth. A woman, shepherding four kids and looking like she hasn't had a full night's sleep in years, returns it.

"Here, let me help you, if that's okay."

Her nod of approval prompts me to lend a hand with one of her bags as the youngest charges back toward the ocean.

"Oliver! Oliver, come back here!" She springs after him, sweeping him up and carrying him back.

"Thank you so much." Her gratitude rings sincere. I mentally pat myself on the back. If ever questioned, she'll remember me as kind and decidedly not creepy.

"Mom." One of the other tugs at her towel.

"Wait a second, Dylan."

"Mooooom. Mom. Mom. Mom." Dylan and his sister take turns chanting her title, treating it like a game. Oblivious, they don't realize their mom is teetering on the edge of her patience. I suppress a glare. Spoiled brats.

"My husband is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait." A puff of breath sends a loose strand of hair out of her face. "My mom is getting here tonight. And let me tell you, I can't wait to speak to another adult." A tired smile plays on her lips. "But I'm babbling and holding you up."

"I can carry your bag to your car if that's easier. I'm not in a hurry."

"Oh, I couldn't possibly ask you to do that."

"It would be my pleasure."

And it truly would be. After all, I can't lurk in the shadows forever. I need to be seen, but not really noticed. I must integrate myself into their lives.
