Ruan is in there too.

I can't turn back now. With every step I take toward the medic, the more I want to vomit. My nerves are on edge.

The door to the medic is slightly open. I pull it open and walk into the small lobby.

Family members of the affected are filling all of the chairs. The woman at the desk looks up at me.

"Can I help you?"

"Yes, I'm looking for Ruan Sellis?" I walk closer to the desk.

"Mr. Sellis is right down this hall," she points to her right. "Last door to the right."

"Thank you."

I walk to the end of the hall and stand in front of the door. My heart is beating wildly in my chest. Ruan is on the other side of this door.

I raise my hand to the doorknob, but it twists and the door opens before I get a chance to. Black slacks. I look up at the man in front of me.

Ruan. His hair is pulled back into a bun on top of his head. His auburn coily curls poking out every which way. His eyes are fixed on me.

"Miss Cottonwood?"

"Ruan. We need to talk," I look him in the eye. Everything in me wants him. All of him. All to myself.

"I see. There is an empty room next door. Should we go there?" He gestures to the door across from the hall.

"Yes, thank you." I take a step back and he walks around me to the door. He opens it and gestures for me to go first.

I walk into the room. Empty cots. The cure must be working faster here than it does at home. Either that or everyone in this room has died. I frown.

I hear the door close and Ruan clears his throat.

"You wants to speak to me?"

I turn to face him.

"Yes. I don't know how else to bring this up, so I'm going to just say it," I hesitate.

"Miss Cottonwood there's no need. Our relationship has been made quite clear."

"Shut up, Ruan. Let me say this before I lose the nerve to."

He raises an eyebrow and nods.

"Ruan, I'm pregnant. I know you don't want anything to do with me, and I suspect you won't want anything to do with the child either, but it's only right you should know," I stare down at my hands. I can't muster the nerve to look at his face.

"Are you sure the baby is mine?"

What did he just ask me? He dares to ask if it's his? Does he see me as a trollop who will fuck just anyone?

I look at him and frown.

"You are the only man I've had sex with. My hair is turning the same shade as yours. I am completely certain this child is yours Mr. Sellis. Now, I've said what I've come to say. I'm leaving now," I go to walk by him, but as I do he grabs my wrist.

"What?" I ask. He doesn't say anything. He's just standing there in silence with his eyebrows knitted together.
