Chapter Three

Chasity

I peeked at Duke from the corner of my eyes as he exited my office. I saw the confused look he gave me when I turned him down. Usually, I never told him no. I loved sex just as much as he did, if not more, but my pussy was still sore from earlier, and after the news I just got, my mind was on overload.

When I first heard it, I was overcome with emotions. I was so excited but a bit nervous at the same time. To keep my mind from going haywire, I focused on my work. I had a few clients I had to reach out to, then I wanted to focus on getting everything prepared for the gala. It was only weeks away, and I wanted everything to be perfect.

I still needed to hire a caterer and an event designer. I wanted the theme to be red and gold. Then I had to line up some auditions for an emcee. I was going to be extremely busy for the next couple weeks. I just prayed that I could keep my energy up to make it all happen. Just thinking about everything I had to do had me exhausted already.

I’ve had the Christmas Gala every year for the past five years. This cause was extremely important to me because cancer affected so many children and families around the world. Myself included. My sister died when I was seven years old from Leukemia. Her name was Angel. I remember how hard it was for my parents to watch their oldest daughter suffer from the disease. They felt so helpless because they couldn’t do anything to help her. I remember Christmas time being one of the saddest times for our family. My parents were just keeping their heads above water. They could barely pay the rent, so Christmas presents for me and my sister were out of the question.

Even though I understood, it was still hard on my parents. For me, every Christmas I got to spend with my big sister was the only gift I needed. Five years ago, I thought about what I could do to help those families that were going through the same things my parents went through with Angel. That’s when I came up with the Christmas Gala and my charity. I call it A Christmas for an Angel. I loved planning for the annual Christmas Gala, and I always had such a good time at the party. The best reward was to see all the families that we were able to help. It made it all worth it.

Duke re-entering my office snapped me out of my thoughts. “I’m going into a meeting with Dedrick. If you need me, text me.”

“Okay.”

Duke gave me a peculiar look as if he wanted to say something. I guess he changed his mind, because he walked back out my office, leaving the door open. I shook my head at my husband. I knew that me taking too long to come back from lunch was bothering him.
