The Power to Motivate

M anagers at all levels use language to lead, reason with, rebuke, reassure and inspire those who look to them for leadership. It takes a special talent to use language to reach the hearts and minds of listeners. Those at a management level should seek to develop a style and a level of communication that can convey the message succinctly and in a memorable manner. Three excerpts from speeches demonstrate this point – the first from Franklin D. Roosevelt, the second from Winston Churchill, and the third from Martin Luther King, Jr.. On March 4, 1933, Roosevelt when speaking to a tired and despondent nation, in the midst of the Depression, said,

“This great nation will endure as it has always endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…”
