Chapter Three

Craig never expected it would feel like this—a perfect bonding of heart and soul. It was as if he’d found himself and all he’d ever longed for, yet clearly hadn’t realized what was lacking until that moment. Now that he’d experienced it, he wanted more. He wanted it to never end.

He watched the other three laugh around the table in Alejandro’s as they scooped queso dip and salsa onto their tortilla chips. What would they say if he told them he wanted the queso to go so they could eat it off the women at home? How would they feel if he told them he wanted this new facet of their lives to continue beyond this weekend? That what he felt now went so far beyond sex for conception that he couldn’t put it into words?

Another margarita might help loosen his tongue. Craig dismissed the notion the second he thought it. They needed to know what he was proposing came from the heart, not his dick, and certainly not the alcohol.

The women lifted their margarita glasses. Both had opted for virgin strawberry margaritas. Rachel was determined to follow whatever dictates a pregnant woman would have to follow. If Liz had to do it, she would too. So…no liquor.

Each licked the sugar from around the glass rim. His cock hardened. Judging from Rob’s quick intake of breath, he was no less affected. Maybe the time was right. Maybe he could move forward on the presumption they’d all agree and see where it took them. He laughed at himself. Maybe he should just keep quiet and give it the weekend. Even as he thought that, he knew he wouldn’t change his mind.

They leaned back as the waitress delivered steaming plates of food. Being occupied with eating would help cover any awkward silence that might develop, and give them something to look at if they wanted to avoid eye contact.

“I want to talk about what we did,” he said.

Glances shifted his way. No one moved beyond that. Craig swore they’d all stopped breathing. He smiled.

“No, I don’t have any regrets…except for the fact we didn’t do it sooner.”

Shoulders relaxed.

“That’s how Liz and I feel too,” his brother said. “Like we’re now whole, and we’d never realized something was missing.”

Rachel nodded and curled her hand over Craig’s thigh. “Me too.”

He squeezed her fingers. “So where does that leave us? Where do we go beyond this weekend? Do we turn our backs on something that, for lack of a better phrase, completes us?”

Rob slipped his white paper placemat from under his plate and grabbed the tiny box of crayons from the wire centerpiece that normally kept kids occupied. “Here’s what I was thinking. When we go house shopping…”

* * * *

Rachel nibbled at her cheese enchilada. Food didn’t taste right. The Spanish rice was more like cardboard, the enchilada was bland, and the smell of the refried beans turned her stomach. About the only thing that hit the spot was the virgin margarita, except now she was craving strawberries something fierce.
