Dorran was grateful for Bettany. He didn’t know how he would have gone through the day without her.

He called her as soon as he and Eli had hung up. Eli had tried calling him to tell him he’d arrested his father, and he’d been apologetic. Dorran had told him it didn’t matter, and it didn’t. This was Eli’s job, and the fact that he’d had to arrest Angus meant he had good reasons to do that. Dorran hadn’t asked, and Eli hadn’t volunteered details.

So here Dorran was, alone in his living room, with his little sister sleeping in the guest room. Rose had been surprisingly tame during her nighttime routine, and Dorran wasn’t sure if it was because that was how she normally behaved or because of everything that was happening. He was looking forward to getting to know her, but he wished it hadn’t been this way. He also wished Bettany would have taken Rose home with her, but she already had two kids and no room in her apartment. She was ready to help any way she could if Dorran needed her, and she’d brought some clothes and toys since Dorran hadn’t had the time to go to his father’s apartment. He didn’t know if he would be able to. It depended on whether Eli and Mel thought it was a crime scene or not.

Dorran didn’t even know what had happened to Darla. She was dead, but how had it happened? If Angus had been arrested, it had to have been a murder. Dorran didn’t really want details, but he wished he knew more. That was why he was waiting for Eli to come home, even though he didn’t know if Eli would. He should probably have called, but he didn’t feel like it. He didn’t feel like doing anything but lie on the couch and stare at the ceiling.

“You know this isn’t going to solve anything,” Francis said.

“I don’t expect it to. I just want some time to feel sorry for myself.”

Francis snorted. “Well, I think you’ve already had more than enough time for that to happen. Eli is coming.”

Dorran rolled his head to the side and glared at Francis. “You’re spying on him?”

“No. I keep an eye on the front door.” He wiggled his fingers and disappeared just as Dorran heard the sound of a key being pushed into the lock of his front door.

He didn’t move. He stared at the door, smiling when Eli came in on tiptoes. Dorran didn’t know if Eli had checked his phone. He’d been texting Eli the entire afternoon, telling him about Rose and what was happening, but Eli hadn’t answered.

“I thought you’d be in bed,” he said when he noticed Dorran on the couch.

Dorran swung his legs to the side and sat up. “I don’t think I’d be able to sleep even if I went to bed.”

Eli grimaced. “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have anything to be sorry about. You did your job, and I never expected you not to do it.
