NOVALIE

Laid across the table are everyone’s weapons and ammunition. As each of them gears up, I unzip a heavy bag and inspect its contents, checking that each armor plate is in good condition for use.

“Boys!” I call out to them. “I’ve got some more toys for you here.”

“Armor?” asks Ryker as he walks over first. He takes the plate from my hands and runs a finger down them. “I suppose we’ll be infiltrating a stronghold after all. Good call on this, Novalie.”

“Where did you get all of these?” asks Devir as he fastens the plate beneath his clothing.

“The Peacekeeper Armory.”

“Ha! You’d think with an arsenal like this, the Peacekeepers would actually be accomplishing something!” exclaims Syril. No one laughs as the room becomes filled with silent tension. I glare at Syril, letting him know I’m far from impressed by his remarks.

“Syril!” yells Renan. “Shut the fuck up, would you? She did you a favor, you can be an ass again later.”

Syril raises his hands, mumbling an apology under his breath.

“All of you gather around then. We need to go over the plan one final time before we move in.” Each of us takes our seats, looking at a holographic map of the enemy stronghold. Renan strokes his chin, analyzing the map as he walks back and forth.

“So here’s how it’s going to go down. Novalie and I will approach from behind, while Syril and Devir will each accost the stronghold from the right and left sides respectively. Tven, you’ll temporarily stay posted near the front where you’ll deactivate the shields. That should cause enough of a distraction for the rest of us to move in without too many guys in our way.”

“It’ll take them around seven minutes to get the shields running again,” says Tven.

“Make sure you’re already within the stronghold’s parameters when that happens. Approach from any angle you wish, just make sure you don’t get seen.”

“Think you can do that?” teases Syril, nudging Tven by the elbow.

“This is serious!” I hiss at him. “If this doesn’t work out, Renan and I will be finished.”

“She’s right,” says Ryker before turning to his brother. “What will you have me do?”

“I need you to sabotage the communications systems so they can’t get any signals out. Infiltrate once that’s taken care of. So, are there any questions? No? Well, then, gear up!”

An hour later, I lay in the grass alongside Renan, performing reconnaissance from afar with my binoculars. Given the name, there’s a large number of enemy forces patrolling the stronghold out front, each of them heavily armed. Never in all my years have I seen such a considerable unit made up of members from all three mafia families. The sight in itself is surreal.

The stronghold is a large mansion, guarded by a looming barbed wire fence. The building itself seems to at one point have been a prosperous house, but its current occupants clearly don’t take much care in its appearance. The mansion’s faded red colors in the downpour of rain is like a pale puddle of blood.
