SPENCER

Spencer loved weeding his garden during the early morning hours. When he first started, the air remained crisp and cool. He eased his way into the task with his flannel on and a cup of tea in his hand as he walked through the rows of beds, making note of his remaining harvest and which plants were ready to be replaced with something new.

Mornings were a magical part of the day, but by the time he finished the tea and weeded the first bed, he’d taken his shirt off and knelt on the ground with dirt up to his elbows and a smile on his face. Drops of sweat eased down his forehead, and when he looked up to wipe them away, something caught his eye.

He froze. His breath caught. It couldn’t be. His imagination must have gotten away from him. But no, the dot in the distance continued to grow.

“Aleron,” Spencer gasped.

He couldn’t manage to stand. He couldn’t even blink. What if he did and the image vanished, proving to be his mind playing tricks on him? Every time he’d seen the shadow of a bird the past couple of days, he’d have sworn it was Aleron returning to him, as Merry had predicted.

But this time, it wasn’t a bird.

Spencer remained kneeling next to the bed of vegetables, staring at the sky as the griffin’s shape grew larger and became clearer. Aleron landed at the edge of the garden, and from one step to the next, transformed into his human form. The bags on his back fell to the ground, and he moved toward Spencer with such grace and confidence Spencer’s stomach flipped with excitement.

Aleron dropped to his knees in front of Spencer, put his hands on Spencer’s cheeks, then leaned closer. “Hey there, handsome. Miss me?”

Spencer couldn’t even think of a response. He grabbed Aleron and pulled him in, pressing their foreheads together as he breathed in the fresh, clean scent of him. He’d missed that scent and wanted to identify it. He needed a candle made of it so he could have the scent of Aleron with him all the time.

Aleron laughed, his body moving as he pulled back. “What are you thinking?”

“That you smell good. I want a candle that captures your scent.” Spencer moved Aleron’s hands from his face and tucked his head into Aleron’s neck. He breathed and squeezed him closer.

Aleron’s hands moved to his hair, running through the strands as they knelt among the plants. “I missed you too,” Aleron whispered against Spencer’s temple.

Spencer grinned against Aleron’s neck, then raised his head. He met those twinkling eyes and knew the truth. “Bailey made you come.”

Aleron laughed. “Yep, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t miss you or that the moment he told me to I was in the air and on my way. Sometimes I need a little nudge.”

Spencer pushed against him. “Then there’s your nudge to come inside. I haven’t had breakfast yet. Will you join me?”

“Food would be good.”

Once he got to his feet, Spencer reached out his hand and pulled Aleron up.
