All we really know is that on occasion a drink makes us feel better, and sometimes it seems to have more of a positive effect than others. For binge drinkers or weekend drinkers (i.e. people who drink a lot when they drink but then take breaks from their drinking), in the early days of our drinking the negative effects we encounter after a drink are, on the whole, relatively minor and we can get through them without too much fuss. We are younger and stronger and don’t have years of accumulated poisoning and sleep loss to contend with. Even when we encounter a horrendous hangover, we are only too aware that this has been caused by alcohol and it is clear to us that abstinence and time will provide the cure.
