. . . April Einstein

through the blossomy waters

rebellious, laughing

under liberty’s dead arm

has come among the daffodils

shouting

that flowers and men

PAULINE EINSTEIN IN HER LAST DAYS

On a visit to her daughter, Maja, and son-in-law, Paul, in Lucerne, Pauline, now aged sixty-two, is diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and admitted to the Rosenau Sanatorium.

Albert brings her to Haberlandstrasse 5, where he and Elsa care for her. During her last days he tries to raise her spirits by reciting the news of his successes.

After her death, Albert tells Elsa: ‘Now I know what it’s like to see one’s mother go through the agony of death and be unable to help; there is no consolation. We all have to bear such heavy burdens, for they are unalterably linked to life.’
