“I just came from Dr. Leighton’s,” she told him.

“How’s Chuck?”

“Sleeping deeply. The doc says it’s from the medicine. Said that Chuck might be out for days.

The first few are always the worst, he said, till the body adjusts to the pain and the blood loss.”

“I feel awful about what happened.”

“It wasn’t your fault. You were sleeping like the rest of us.”

“Hmm,” he mumbled, but she knew she wasn’t convincing him.

He removed his Stetson and planted it on the stall boards. She pivoted her shoulder toward him and the hem of her skirts brushed his pant leg.

She felt the firm grip of his hand on her wrist.

“Willa.”

Her insides rumbled in warning, her dry lips stuck together.

He pulled her tighter toward him. Her boots shuffled on the straw.

“Willa,” he said again, softly exploring the expression on her face.

When he drew her closer, she fell against his rock-solid chest. There was a look of something rough in his eyes. Something primal. Urgent.

He dropped her hand. It fell to her side. She was breathing heavy on his collar, his face and body arching toward her as if he wanted nothing more than to snatch every inch of clothing off her body.

With a heated groan, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

It was a deep, throbbing kiss that may have started on her lips, but the sensations rocked all of her senses.

She breathed in the scent of his skin. Heard the

crunching of straw beneath their feet. Tasted the essence of Harrison, became aware of the pressing of their bodies from rib to thigh and felt the overpow-ering desire to be with this man.

She kissed him back with the same urgency, loved the way their lips melded and the way he explored her with his mouth.

His head dropped and he kissed her throat, sending ripples through her. Without so much as touching her breasts, there seemed to be an invisible tie between every spot he kissed on her throat to the very tips of her nipples. Tugging, pulling, making her want more.

She didn’t fear him.

This was a good man.

This was a man who cared about people. Who’d lost his first love and was perhaps aching for another. They were the same, then, weren’t they? Two lonely souls yearning to be together, at this moment, in this place.

Harrison savored the feel of her throat, her earlobe, the sweet taste of her skin and the way her blond hair draped across her shoulders.

He was overwhelmed with the emotions that surged through him, the desire to fulfill her, the need to please Willa, the urgency to protect her and keep her safe from harm. He wanted to keep her here forever, just the two of them together and to hell with the rest of the world.

He wanted to please her, to show her there shouldn’t be any fear between a man and woman when they were alone together. He wanted to ease her mind and her heart from whatever terror she’d experienced in Skagway.
