Select external workers who thrive on collaboration and fit with your team

If one of the key aspects of effectively using external talent in your business is inviting and welcoming them in, it is also vital that the people you bring in are the right people. Expertise is important, but it’s not sufficient on its own: to make your workforce function as an efficient team you need to select externals who work well with others and fit in with your organization.

As individuals progress through their careers, from assistant roles to more responsible positions, they acquire not only technical prowess but also interpersonal skills. In fact, studies show that without developing such skills people are unlikely to progress into leadership positions. This is particularly important to consider when working with freelancers. By the nature of their roles, external workers operate from a more isolated position, so it’s vital for team cohesiveness that you select those who have the inclination, and necessary relationship skills, to work well as a member of a team. And not just any team: they need to fit in with the specific requirements of the team you’re placing them in.

When considering freelancers, take time to understand not only their technical abilities but also the way they relate to others. Try and observe how they are with colleagues, superiors, and, especially, subordinates. See if they lead effectively, contribute originally, and collaborate willingly, or are still at the stage of assisting and supporting other more experienced workers. These observations will give you an insight into their working style and their interpersonal skills, and whether they fit the role you have for them.

For your evaluation to be as effective as it can be, you also need to consider your existing internal staff. For example, you may believe you’re filling a junior role because you already have an internal manager. But by studying the manager’s relationship skills you may find you actually need to employ a more senior, responsible freelancer to help oversee a particular project. After all, finding the right tool for the job requires first knowing exactly what that job is.

The ability to work well as part of a team is a vital attribute in external freelancers. Aim to employ only those who actively want to participate with your organization. You can make this easier for all involved by ensuring that the role you place them in is appropriate for their level of interpersonal skills, and those of their internal teammates.
