And so we see that the coming of the kingdom of God is a present event and a future event as well. How do we put this together? The kingdom of God has come, but we eagerly await the final consummation. The kingdom of God comes into the lives of people who obey the gospel by repenting of their sin and submitting to Jesus Christ in this age. Believers are rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son (Col. 1:13). But, we will not step into the fullness of God’s promises until Jesus returns to remove everything in opposition to Himself and manifest His glorious kingdom to the ends of the earth.

As a result, believers are said to live in both ages. We still live in the old age. Yet, the powers of the new age have begun in our lives. Thus we begin to experience some of the blessings and power of living under God’s good reign now, but we will not enter into the fullness of these blessings until the consummation of the kingdom. 6 We will see momentarily what Jesus is doing in the time between His first and second coming. But for now I want to note that Jesus is doing extraordinary kingdom works even through the weakness, sin, and suffering in this present age!

Let me give you an example. In the Age to Come all believers will be healed from sickness, and God will clothe us with immortality (Luke 20:36). This is really a stunning reality—we will never experience death again! But death has not been removed from reality in this present age. We will all die once (except those who are alive when Christ returns).

Nevertheless, we do see the powers of the new age come upon people in this age when Jesus heals people as recorded in the Gospels (Mark 5:34; 10:52). And these moments are truly thrilling because they give us previews of the Age to Come. Thus, we should pray for healing when we are sick (James 5:13–15). But we must also recognize that Jesus did not heal everyone while He was on earth, and He does not heal everyone in this age. 7 Yet God still shows Himself glorious in the midst of sin and suffering because He uses it to bring about the salvation of many.

I have a friend whose son had a birth defect. When she was pregnant the doctors told her that her son would die shortly after he was born. She and her family prayed for healing. But after she held her babe for thirty-one minutes, smelling his newborn scent, and stroking his delicate fingers, his soul returned to his Maker. She was heartbroken. As a mother, I weep every time I tell this story; yep, I am weeping right now as I type. I cannot wait until the Age to Come when there will be no more death, no more goodbyes, no more separation sorrow from the ones we love.
