Sean wondered what he had ever seen in Carla as he sat across the breakfast table from her on Saturday morning. He’d been arguing with her for thirty minutes, but she refused to give Macy another chance. While she was a creative genius, she lacked a lick of common sense when it came to anything outside of her culinary domain.

Sean set his coffee mug down on the table with a thud. “What’s your plan then, Carla? You’ve exhausted your search for babysitters, and we’re way too busy at the restaurant for Josh to come to work with you.”

“I’ll figure something out. I just need a few days.”

Sean planted his elbow on the table and raked his fingers through his auburn hair. “We don’t have a few days. We need to capitalize on the success we’ve seen this week. We have to be on our A game. Now is not the time to slack off.”

Carla stared down at her coffee, her hands wrapped around the mug. “I’m sorry, Sean. But my son comes first.”

He glanced over at Josh, who was too busy slurping down Froot Loops to pay attention to what the grown-ups were saying. “If you’re so concerned about your son, why do you let him eat that garbage?”

Sean realized he’d crossed a line, and he prepared for Carla’s wrath, but she didn’t look up from her coffee. “I’m too exhausted from last night to make him breakfast.”

“And you call yourself a chef,” Sean grumbled as he pushed back from the table. He snatched up the cereal bowl and dumped the contents down the disposal.

Josh jumped up and rushed over to the counter, staring into the sink as the Froot Loops went down the drain. “Hey! Why’d you do that?” the kid asked, staring up at Sean with his mama’s emerald eyes.

“Because I’m cooking you eggs for breakfast.” He opened the refrigerator and removed a carton of eggs. “They’ll make you strong so you can do all the cool stuff big kids do.”

Josh peered over the top of the counter, watching Sean beat two eggs with a fork. “Will you put cheese in them like Macy does?”

“You bet,” Sean said, returning to the refrigerator for the grated cheddar cheese.

Josh stuck his lower lip out in a pout. “I don’t understand why Macy had to leave. I really like her.”

Sean gave Carla a scornful look. “I do too, buddy.” He tousled the boy’s sandy curls before returning his attention to the stove.

When the eggs were done, Sean scooped them onto a plate and carried it to the table for Josh. “Carla, I need a word with you in private.” Without waiting for her response, he turned his back on her and walked out onto the veranda.

Carla waited a few minutes before joining him. “I know what you’re gonna say, Sean, but I won’t change my mind about Macy.”

Sean could no longer hold his tongue. He refused to pay Carla to stay at home with Josh. So what if he made her angry enough to quit? At least he’d be rid of her.
