Governor David Paterson
David Paterson had many years of government service before he became New Yorkâs first, and the nationâs fourth, black governor in 2008. In addition to overcoming racial prejudices, Paterson is legally blind. Paterson was born in 1954 and is a lifelong resident of the state of New York. After graduating from law school in 1982, he became an assistant district attorney in Queens. In 1985, he won a seat as a New York state senator, becoming the youngest everâhe was 31. From then until 2006, Paterson worked diligently to serve the people of New York. In 2003, he became the first black leader of the minority party there. Eliot Spitzer chose Paterson as his running mate for the governorship in 2006. The two won in a landslide, and in 2007, Paterson became the first African American lieutenant governor of New York.
