RHYSSA STARED IN horror at the head on the desk. There was no light in those metallic eyes.

“Crater,” she said, clutching Auric’s arm. “No.”

Tarkin smiled thinly. “You asked for proof. Here it is.”

Auric drew himself up. “And the children?”

“They are safe,” Tarkin said. “And they will stay that way. You, on the other hand…”

Rhyssa nodded. “Everything you needed was inside Crater’s head.”

“Precisely,” Tarkin said. “The maps of Wild Space, all your notes on your previous trip to Agaris. I’ll admit, it made for fascinating reading. These Agarians, I can scarcely believe they exist. Sentient fungus. They’ll have to be wiped out, of course. Unless they could be put to work in our mines.”
