Brock was walking his mother’s dog and feeling thoroughly sorry for himself when he spotted a familiar face among the midmorning crowds.

Working for the Shadows, masks had been a requirement whenever he’d spent time at the Lady Gray’s court. The masks were largely ornamental and symbolic, a reminder to keep the guild’s business a secret. As a result, Brock had actually recognized a few of his guildmates—including the town’s perfumer, who’d assisted Master Curse’s experiments on Dangers.

Somehow, things always got complicated for Brock after that man crossed his path. And he was crossing it now, cutting toward outtown with steely purpose.

Brock thought to himself: Who cares? It’s none of my concern now. But by the time he’d finished the thought, he was already unconsciously trailing the man, dragging the dog along behind him.

He couldn’t help it. He was naturally curious. And the perfumer might have been there when Curse was infected, might know something more about what had happened. Furthermore, as a member of the Shadows, he could lead Brock to the Lady Gray’s lair. Brock had half a mind to tell her off.

The other half of his mind was seriously considering begging her to take him back.

Guildlessness was no small thing; it was, in its own way, as sure a death sentence as being banished beyond the wall. It’s just that it took longer, and stripped you of your dignity first. With no source of money and no way to contribute to Freestone, the guildless might survive for a time on charity. Brock’s parents could take care of him for as long as they were around—but he was forbidden to inherit from them, and their status would diminish the longer he stayed with them.

He tried to pretend his father wouldn’t care about losing status, but he knew better. In fact, it was his father’s hunger for prestige that had gotten Brock recruited by the Shadows in the first place.

He felt the Lady Gray owed him—that she should fix this somehow. But as he continued following his best lead to the Shadows, he realized that she wouldn’t see it like that. Certainly he had nothing to offer her now—no details about the adventurers, no maps of the wilds outside the wall, none of the trinkets and treasures she so coveted.

That was the whole idea behind guildlessness. Brock had nothing to offer anybody—nothing of value at all.

He stopped at the end of an alleyway and peered around a corner. The perfumer was pressing into the crowd around the marketplace, skirting around the barricaded area and heading for the open quad with the statues of the Champions. Brock knew the man’s shop had not yet reopened since the elves left for Llethanyl. Maybe he was on an errand for his gray mistress—or maybe he was just shopping.

Should he turn back around? Was this pointless? Brock wasn’t accustomed to indecision, but the path forward had never been so occluded before.

Then he heard a voice whisper at his shoulder: “Are you being incognito?”

Brock yelped and spun around.
