Covid acted as an accelerant on existing trends with a common theme: dispersion. The connective power of technology has the ironic effect of allowing us to be farther apart. Managed well, this Great Dispersion can be an unlock, a way of reorganizing our resources more efficiently.

For workers in bit-based jobs, it means access to employment globally. Office space will be reconfigured to focus on meaningful interactions and to give companies the flexibility to build out teams without regard for geography. And more jobs will be bit-based: Healthcare will see a radical shift toward remote access, making more efficient use of scarce skills and bringing care to underserved regions. Educational institutions where physical space limits enrollment can double or triple class sizes, rotating students through on-campus and dispersed phases and opening satellite locations.

Bits can’t be uncoupled from atoms, and we’ll maximize this unlock with investment in transportation: fast-moving people at every scale, from cross-continent supersonic to crosstown underground; fast-moving goods to doorsteps, not warehouses.
