“Fuck me,” Darby whispered even as he relaxed since Mallory clearly wasn’t a threat to us.

“Yeah.” She stared out the land. “Your mother apologized to me.”

“What? Why?”

“That I wasn’t chosen,” Mallory answered quietly. “She found me after and said she believed I was best, but she was overruled. She told me that she was sorry she wasn’t stronger and couldn’t help me do what was best for Hennaba and to please forgive her. Forgive her? It was my family doing so much to her, and she told me she was sorry. I was sorry.”

“Why?” Izzy asked.

But I already knew the answer. “For not being stronger to help her when she needed it most.”

“Yes, yes, for that, I was always truly sorry. Sorrier than you could ever know and when you woke us, I promised I wouldn’t make that same mistake. I wouldn’t be quiet anymore and help.” She let out a soft sob. “Rennyn gagged me. He used Father’s power even if he was being held at Ankthus and gagged me.”

I whistled. “I’m sorry.”

“Why are you sorry? You’ve done everything for us!”

“I’m sorry I didn’t know and you suffered. It’s not my fault, but I’m sorry you went through it.”

“Thank you, Your Highness.” She winced. “I’m sorry I yelled at you.”

“It’s fine.” I gestured out to the land in front of us. “I want to put a grove here to help the sorbet business and factory. What do you think?”

She didn’t answer right away, taking another long drink of the bottle. “I think it would be perfect, Your Highness. I think it would be beautiful where so much darkness has happened. I think it would be new life and something to give to Faerie instead of always taking.” She laughed again. “But make it tart so we don’t forget the sour past.”

“You saw the blue cherries, right?” Darby chuckled.

She did a double take and then glanced around, focusing on the pail Izzy was holding. Then she burst out laughing, wiping more tears as she tried to pull it together. “No, but Rennyn hated them. He said only commoners should be allowed to eat them so they don’t get too spoiled but stay healthy for the work they need to do for us.”

“I’m really glad that asshole is dead,” Izzy muttered but then winced. “Sorry.”

Mallory shrugged. “I am too.” She offered the bottle to Izzy who simply shrugged as well and took it after setting down the pail.

She plopped down next to Mallory. “I get having a shitty family who doesn’t care about you. My father and eldest brother will be locked up for like ever because they were plotting to force Tams into mating. At least you’re smart enough to appreciate the freedom. My mom can’t and keeps hassling me through people to get them released.”

“You didn’t tell me that,” I sighed as I surveyed the area. “You’re really okay with that grove?”

“I think it’s the best plan for this place in a long time, Your Highness,” Mallory promised.

I nodded, muttering a thanks for the blessing even if I didn’t really need it now that it was all mine.
