“Look who’s awake,” some white lady said as she checked my blood pressure. I looked around the room and quickly realized I was in the hospital. “I’m your Nurse. My name is Susan,” she said and looked at me with a smile.

“What happened?” I asked as I looked at her. I tried to sit up but had no energy. I was so weak and couldn’t remember why or what happened that landed me back here.

“Well, it appears as though you were attacked. I guess it was someone close to you because you tried to kill yourself afterwards,” she explained as my eyes grew larger.

“Kill myself? No! Why would I do that?” I asked as if she would know the answer to that question. She gave me a sympathetic smile before leaving out the room.

Just showing you I got clout. “What? What did you do?” I asked. Next time do what I say. You won’t like the outcome of not listening to me. “This is my body! I do what I want!” I snapped. Yeah, that’s why you took all them damn pain killers huh? That was all me. I’ve been away long enough. “Fuck you, I only took two!” I screamed. Yea, two at a time! Hahaha “Don’t laugh at me, you stupid hoe! Leave me alone!” I screamed again.

“Are you ok Ms. Melton?” Nurse Susan asked as she stepped back into my room. Yea, are you ok, Ms. Melton?

“Bitch, leave me alone!” I snapped.

“Crazy nigger,” Nurse Susan said before she closed the door. I don’t know what she’s mad for, I wasn’t even talking to her!

I grabbed the call button to page the nurse’s station. “How may I help you?” someone answered.

“Can I have some water please?” I asked. Nobody responded but a few minutes later, a little girl dressed in white pants with a red and white striped scrub top brought me a hospital jug filled with ice water. “Thanks,” I said. She didn’t respond as she turned and walked quickly back out the room. Confused about the sudden rudeness, I grabbed the hospital phone to make a quick phone call.

“Hello?” she answered the phone cautiously.

“Hey, it’s me,” I said.

“Girl, what’s wrong? Are you ok?” she asked.

“Yea, but listen, can you come up here and sit with me. They’re saying I tried to kill myself but I didn’t, and I don’t want them trying to lock me up,” I explained.

“Yea sure. Detroit Medical Center?” she asked.

“Yes,” I answered.

“Alright, I’m on my way,” she said before she disconnected the call.

*Knock, Knock*

“Good evening, Ms. Melton, I’m Dr. Moore. How are you?” Dr. Moore asked.

“Just ready to go home,” I answered.

“Unfortunately, we have you on a seventy-two hour hold, Ms. Melton. You’re on suicide watch for the recent attempt on your life,” he explained.

“No, you don’t understand. I didn’t try to kill myself,” I tried to explain but stopped because instead of listening, he was shaking his head at me.

“The people that live under you reported a water leak. When the building manager knocked on your door, he received no answer, so he used his key to enter.
