Chapter Seventeen

Kaitlyn

Lincoln’s grip on me tightened for a moment before they wrenched him away. I tried to reach for him but Cooper grabbed me too, pulling me back as her fingernails bit into my arm mercilessly.

Davos punched him and I screamed. I tried to wrestle out of Cooper’s grip but she was like a mountain made human. I couldn't move her an inch. I cursed her and struggled more but she wouldn't let go.

Davos hit him again and my heart wrenched painfully in my chest.

“Stop it!” I cried, my pain making my voice crack.

Davos looked around at me with a frown and dropped his arm. The other guards dragged Lincoln towards the exit but Davos just stared at me for several seconds. I filled the look I gave him in return with as much hate as I could and he dropped his eyes before hurrying after Lincoln and the other guards.

Sullivan stepped towards me and Cooper finally released her grip. “You have a choice here Kaitlyn. His punishment will depend on your actions now. You can smile and return to the party and play the part of the innocent girl who was just assaulted against her will but is graciously going to forgive the man who attacked you-”

“He didn't attack me,” I spluttered.

“Or you can defend his actions, tell anyone who will listen that you love him or anything else you care to say. And I'll have his head,” he hissed.

My mouth fell open. Surely he didn't mean it. Surely he wouldn't kill Lincoln over something so innocent. But as I looked into his eyes I knew he would.

I took a deep breath and glanced over his shoulder. A line of guards had formed to block us from view for now but I knew there would be plenty of curious people waiting to get a look at me once they moved.

“It was a misunderstanding,” I said. “He got caught up in the moment and overstepped. I didn't encourage him and it won't happen again.” My heart pounded violently against the lie but I knew I had to play along.

“Good girl. I'll put him in the pit overnight. If you play your part well, I'll release him in the morning with no harm done. Later on, you will be matched with Davos and you will court him happily. My displeasure would not fair well for Mr Walsh.”

I nodded in understanding and he turned away from me, dismissing the guards with a wave of his hand. I made an effort to keep my terror from my face, a false smile twisting my lips uncomfortably as he addressed the crowd.

“Not to worry everyone. He'd had a bit too much to drink and overstepped. A night in the pit should help him cool off and nothing more need be said on the matter. It is hard for newcomers to adjust to the rules of the New Day at first. A few transgressions are only to be expected.” He smiled widely and the music started up again as he walked away through the crowd and followed Davos and the other guards outside.
