Tralice regained her senses first, grabbing hold of the door and swinging it round, attempting to slam it on Cardoth. “No, no, no!”

Prince Cardoth adjusted his posture slightly, pushing his boot between the door and the jamb. “Lady Alannys,” he said, wedged uncomfortably in the slight opening of the door, and yet incredibly ignoring Tralice so completely she might not even have existed, “might I beg a moment of your time?”

“My Lady,” Tralice said, her tone a warning, “I must protest. Not just one unmarried man in your private rooms, but two? It’s absolutely unthinkable!”

What she said was true, Alannys knew that. But still…she looked from Cardoth’s crooked grin to Chen, looking on suspiciously, and she thought that if the Prince of Cadenda was determined to talk to her, it would be just as well to have that conversation with others around. Being alone with him had never taken her anywhere she wanted to go.

Alannys did her best to smile at him as though none of that had just crossed her mind. “Prince Cardoth—of course. Please come in.” She was glad, suddenly, that her dagger was in that gigantic trunk and not on her leg.

Tralice abandoned the door, brushing past Alannys with a hard look in her eyes. “I trust my Lady will try harder in the future to remember that such scandalous behavior reflects not only upon herself.”

Alannys could feel the color climbing high in her cheeks. She knew—again—that Tralice’s point was valid, but she still figured a little scandalous behavior was probably preferable to facing Cardoth on his own.

Cardoth shoved the door back open with his toe, and pushed himself off the door frame, approaching her with a swagger that reminded her exactly why she wanted her friends with her. “Good morning, Lady Alannys.”

She crossed her arms defensively over her chest. “Is it?”

For just a second, that seemed to throw him, pausing the swagger while his eyebrows climbed up his forehead. Then he was moving again, his expression carefully smoothed over. “Why, naturally, my Lady—any morning that involves your smiling face is good.”

“That’s not what I meant.” She threw a dark glance at the blackness outside her window. “Are you sure it’s morning?”

Cardoth laughed out loud. “A fine jest means a fine mood. It seems I picked a good time after all.”

“Picked a good time for what, exactly?” Chen demanded, appearing to quite accidentally stand in Cardoth’s way. “You have no business here. Have you somehow forgotten you kidnapped her? Treason doesn’t earn you unfettered access to the keep.”

“Stand down, Singari. It’s hardly treason; she isn’t queen yet.” He drew his sword and used the flat of the blade to nudge Chen to the side. “And have you forgotten the part where I brought her home and fought my own father for her?”

Outrage burned white-hot through her, consuming the polite deference she would usually have shown for a head of state—especially a head of state that Ravanmark dearly needed as an ally. “Put that blade away—where do you
