Your life can be radically changed by Jesus Christ. Mine was on January 20, 1952. I met Jesus Christ and have never been the same since. The foun- dation for all I’ve done was built that day.

I had no idea at the beginning of 1952 that my life would be turned inside out on January 20. The Sunday morning began uneventfully. I awakened early to the smell of hoecakes and bacon wafting up the stairs in my direction. In those days I wondered if Mom used an electric fan to blow those wonderful smells into my bedroom Sunday mornings.

For a moment I lay there breathing in my mother’s love, but wishing she would let me sleep in just one Sunday morning. The radio, as always, was echoing the sermon of Charles Fuller. When I wouldn’t go to church, my mother used this radio evangelist to bring the gospel to me. Finally I succumbed to the smell of fresh molasses syrup, ran down the stairs, and entered the kitchen. I was willing to listen to the sermon in exchange for a hot homemade breakfast. Mom greeted me with a good-morning hug and seated me quickly at the table. Charles Fuller was just reading his text from his radio pulpit in the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium.

I humored my mother by actually listening to Fuller’s sermon that morning. I don’t remember his text, but I do remember feeling something that I had never felt before. As he preached, a lump began to form in my throat. And it wasn’t the hoecakes or the fatback bacon. I felt like crying, but I wasn’t sad. I felt excited, but there was nothing exciting on my schedule that day. I listened to the words of the radio preacher. He asked, “Are you saved?”

I didn’t know a thing about the Holy Spirit. I didn’t know what it meant to be saved or born again. But looking back, it was the presence of the Holy Spirit I was feeling. Sometimes we feel Him; other times we don’t. That morning I felt Him, but didn’t know what I was feeling. He was calling me, but I didn’t recognize His voice. I just felt edgy and excited like the feeling before a storm strikes.

I asked my friends that afternoon, “Does anybody know a church in Lynchburg that preaches what Dr. Fuller preaches on the radio?” A buddy answered, “Yeah, a church over on Park Avenue.” He added quickly, “It’s kind of a holy-roller type church, but they have good music and loads of pretty girls.”

When he said “pretty girls,” I cut in with, “So, why don’t we go?”

“When?” somebody asked.

“Tonight!” I answered.

Otis Wright, Jim Moon, and I drove to the 300-seat Park Avenue Baptist Church. Practically every seat was full. An usher took us to the front row.

I looked down at the songbook the usher had handed me and was surprised to read Gospel Songs from the Old Fashioned Revival Hour. There are no coincidences when God is at work. Immediately I felt at home and believed that I had done the right thing by coming to this church.
