Chapter Eleven

With my driver’s license in hand, I walked beside Shea into the high rise building that Stephan owned.

Shea had opted to stay home with me and walk me in for my first day, so I could bypass some of the security protocols they usually made new employees go through. No one at the security desk even questioned him as he grabbed a visitor sticker for me, slapped it on my shoulder, and waved me through the metal detectors.

Shea walked around the metal detectors and then took me to the elevators that would take us up to Stephan’s office.

Everyone wore expensive outfits, had styled hair, and moved with purpose.

Everyone except me. I gawked at all of the shiny surfaces, chrome detailing, and beautiful opal and grey marble floors.

“This is the most beautiful building I have ever seen,” I whispered to Shea.

He chuckled. “Tell Stephan that. He likes bragging about how much time and effort he put into making this building pretty.”

“So, Mr. Security, what should I expect from here?” I asked.

“I’m going to take you to human resources, where they will give you a packet of papers to fill out. Then we go to Stephan’s so you can talk and discuss what position you want. If you want a tour, then I’ll give you a tour of the building and describe every area and what they do. You can observe them for a bit, or we will continue on until you finally have the full tour. Once that is done, we’ll return to Stephan’s office for you to finally choose your position. After that, you’ll fill out your paperwork, get your ID card, go back to HR, and officially become one of the employee’s here.”

“Oh, is that all?” I asked with a chuckle.

“Well, after that is lunch, meetings, and I’m not sure what else Stephan has planned for the day,” he answered.

“Can I take a nap first? I’m tired just from hearing all of that,” I said and sighed.

Shea bent and kissed my cheek. “Kitten, we’re right here with you. You’ll be fine.”

I didn’t want to admit to him how much better that made me feel.

The elevator doors opened to a floor full of cubicles, with employees typing away on the computers.

Shea stepped out and I followed him to the third row, seventh cubicle down.

The woman in the cubicle had dozens of pictures of children on her cubicle wall, a short A-line haircut, and she wore a bright pink dress.

Shea cleared his throat.

She spun her chair around to look at us and smiled. “Hello, Shea. What can I do for you?”

He tipped his head towards me. “New.”

She turned and smiled at me. “Hello. Welcome to the company. I’ll get your paperwork printed in one minute. Shea, why don’t you two have a seat?” She tilted her head towards two chairs in her cubicle and then spun back to type quickly on her computer.

I sat, but Shea remained standing.

“Do you know what position you’re starting at today?” she asked me.

“No, ma’am,” I answered immediately.
