Chapter 7

“No way.” I stared at Priscilla. Her stare was deadly behind her prim, proper glasses. She wasn’t joking. Not about this.

“Yes,” she said and leaned forward, dropping her voice to a whisper. “It was in the Dean’s office.”

“Why were you there?”

Her cheeks turned a delicate shade of pink when she informed me.

“I was accepting an award for my excellent grades. Anyways, that’s not the point.” She said the last part when I began to clap excitedly like a good friend. Right. The Officials. Investigating the Core Council. Secrets. Discoveries.

“It was on his desk. I didn’t see much, but it was a piece of paper. There was some kind of symbol at the top of it. It looked a bit like the Beast Academy symbol, like the one on your shirt…but it was different. I didn’t get a good enough look to tell how, but I know that it wasn’t the same.” She sucked in a breath. “Fiona, I saw it written on the top of the page. By Order of The Officials.”

My skin erupted into goosebumps. The blood in my veins seemed to frost over.

“On the Dean’s desk?” I echoed. Footsteps were coming down the hallway. She nodded fervently.

“Yes. Keep that in mind. I’ll talk to you about it tomorrow.” We returned back to our work as Lucius came strolling back in, looking delightful more relaxed than when he had arrived.

“Thanks for coming,” I said loudly, facing her. “I’m so grateful that I can study with students like you guys.” Lucius came up behind me.

“Should I help you with these?” he asked, gesturing towards the trays.

“You can carry them to the entryway. They’re much lighter since we feasted on the sandwiches and sushi rolls.”

“Do you think Sahni will include the Legitimation Act of 1779 on the quiz?” Priscilla asked worriedly as we walked to the entrance. She tugged one of her braids. I shrugged.

“I’m not sure. She’s a fanatic for legal history, I’ve noticed.”

Lucius nodded. I turned to see what he was going to say, but his words froze in his mouth when he spotted something in the entryway. I followed his gaze to see the ornate grandfather’s clock in the foyer.

“Oh, are you looking at the clock? It’s dragon metal, I think. Something like that.”

He nodded numbly and stood stock still beside us. “It’s familiar. Actually, you know, that clock is kind of special. It—”

His words cut off as Enrique suddenly appeared in front of us. Out of nowhere! I furrowed my brow, glancing at him, but his attention was not on me. No, his enchanting eyes were focused solely on Lucius. The blond shot a mischievous grin towards my new friend. He clapped a hand on Lucius’ shoulder.

I had seen that move before. Most recently with Sam.

“Lucius, is it?” he asked playfully. I knew Enrique well enough to know there was something hiding beneath his tone. It was a shade of danger. The color seemed to drain from Lucius’ face. He looked about as lively as a phantom.
