Chapter Ten

“Look, I want to hear all about it, of course I do, and DON’T skimp on the details,” Sam said, jumping a puddle in the uneven sidewalk, “but I have to tell you something huge first!”

“Go for it!” Chloe enthused, happy to be spared the revealing of ‘details’.

“Mike made a pass at me while you guys were gone.”

Chloe snorted. They stepped off the curb, did a quick car check, and raced across the street.

“Really? That’s your big news, really? Mike makes a pass at you five times before breakfast on a normal day.”

“No. He was serious this time!”

“Did he put on glasses and read the business section of the newspaper while hitting on you?”

“Very funny. Chloe, he wasn’t drunk this time!” Sam hefted her full backpack higher on her shoulder and frowned at her

“Well, the fact that he wasn’t drunk really is shocking, let me catch my breath a minute, I think my heart just stopped.”

“This is serious!” Sam stressed. “Listen, we were sitting on the couch, watching some comedy special, you know, laughing, and he goes out to the kitchen and makes a bag of microwave popcorn. I smell it cooking, and I think, yeah, that sounds good about right now, I’m going to make some too. So I hear the microwave go off, I wait a minute, just to let him clear out of there, and then I get up and go into the kitchen, and he’s coming out with two bowls.”

“He was bringing you a bowl of popcorn? Like he consciously decided that it might be a nice thing to do without you asking him?” Chloe clarified.

“Yes!”

“You’re sure he didn’t just make two bowls for himself and you misunderstood?”

“I know you’re making fun, but actually, I did kind of think that, so I asked him! And he got all kind of pissy about it, like ‘hey-I’m-a-nice-guy-sometimes’.

“Ha!” Chloe laughed.

“I know, right? But I was kind of impressed, I’ve never seen him do something thoughtful before, and so we went and sat down and I actually started talking to him a little bit. And then out of the blue, he looks at me and he says: ‘you know I really like you a lot, right?’ and I go, ‘okay’.”

“Like a breathy Marilyn Monroe ‘hoooo-kay’ or a sarcastic Sam ‘okay’ which is interchangeable with ‘whatever’?” Chloe asked innocently.

“Whatever,” Sam affirmed. “And then…and then he closes his eyes and starts to lean in… just like that!”

“What? What did you do?” Chloe demanded, interested in spite of herself.

“I kissed him.”

“NO…YOU…DID…NOT!” Chloe squealed. “What?! Ewww! Mike? Don’t tell me anymore… there’s not anymore, right?”

Sam laughed and unlocked the door of her car, throwing her backpack inside.

“I don’t remember,” Sam teased.

Chloe waited patiently for Sam to reach over and unlock her door before demanding an answer.

“You’re not serious, is there more?” she asked.

“Noooo. I kind of backed up and said: whoaaa, Mike this is not a good idea.”

“And he said?” Chloe prodded.

“He wanted to know why not, and I said that I’m kind of dating your friend Jeff, and he was all like, you’re not dating, he still sees other girls.
