I HOPED to hear from Rem again soon, but it would be four months before he’d reach out to me. “Thomas! You’ve got a package!” Mom called me inside. I pulled Madeline off the swing we’d been playing on and carried her inside. She was pretty good at walking, but I still liked carrying her most of the time, especially when we had to cross the little parking lot that was right in front of the row of townhouses.

Mom had already put the package down on the dining room table when I came in, and I helped Madeline into her high chair before sitting down at the table myself. It didn’t look like Rem’s writing, too curvy and pretty for sure, but with almost two years since the last time I’d seen him, maybe he’d changed his handwriting. I should have known better as I opened the little yellow package and wedding photos spilled out onto the table.

Mom and Dad came over to see what had made me gasp, and she quickly tried to pull them away from me, but I put my hand over hers, stopping her. Of course they’d gotten married. It was practically inevitable. Hot college quarterback with a nearly guaranteed pro football career and the beautiful daughter of a senator. “Hey. What’s up? Everything okay with Madeline?” he asked me right away. It was nice to know he cared about her that much and was worried about her.

I swallowed back my hurt and the love I still had for him and tried to be an adult about this. “Yeah. She’s good. Right beside me actually. Angela sent me some photos. Looks like you had a really nice wedding.” I couldn’t stop a little of the hurt from coming through, but I hope he didn’t dwell on it. I still loved him; that wasn’t going away. I could be a man about him getting married to someone else, though, and try to just be happy for him.

“Shit. I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to see them. I didn’t want you knowing.”

I shook my head and put Angela’s letter aside. She wished I could have been there as Rem’s best man instead of some guy she didn’t really like who was on the Crusaders with him. But she understood I was busy with classes and the baby.

“It’s fine,” I told him quickly. “You looked good. So did she.” Responsible adult, here I came. This wasn’t some
