HAILEY

I stretched in my small bed, then curled up again. Aside from the anxiety of not knowing my fate, plus the complete lack of freedom or entertainment, being in this prison gave me plenty of time to take naps. Most of the time, my sleep at night was fitful, filled with bad dreams or that feeling of having had a bad dream without remembering the details, but for some reason, my naps were solid.

It was starting to rain outside, the perfect time to be curled up. The loneliness was starting to creep in, though, but as I drifted off to sleep, it faded. Was that why I was so addicted to naps? Because it was an escape from my reality?

So was getting off to thoughts of Arthur. Thoughts of our hookups came into my head frequently, working me up so much that I had no choice but to relieve the tension.

I rolled onto my back and slid my hand down my pants and over my panties, lightly teasing my clit through the fabric. Memories of how well Arthur made me come, like he knew my body better than I did, rushed to the front of my mind.

I jumped when someone banged on my door.

“Just a minute!” I called, yanking my hand out of my pants. If it was another one of the prisoners trying to get my attention, I was going to be pissed.

But it wasn’t. It was Ruben. The detached politeness was gone from his expression, replaced with ice.

“Come with me,” he said, turning before I could even respond.

I stuffed my feet into my shoes and pulled on my coat, trying to tame my curls as I walked.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Is everything okay?”

“You’ll have to ask High Ruler Arthur.”

Shit. So it probably wasn’t good. Or maybe it was, and Ruben wasn’t happy with whatever Arthur had to say. Maybe I was going to be freed.

He walked me to the same interrogation building, weaving through the ever-changing hallways to another room. This time, Arthur was waiting for me, standing with his arms crossed over his chest and his mouth pressed into a line. My stomach sank.

“Sit,” he said.

I did as he said, and the door slid shut behind me. I didn’t know what to say, so I folded my hands in my lap.

“What’s going on?” I asked, even though the look on his face told me everything that I needed to know. Nothing good was happening. “Is everything all right?”

“I don’t know. That’s what I’m here to figure out.” He studied me.

“Okay, then.” I swallowed. “What’s going on?”

He looked at me for several beats, as if he were waiting for me to fill in the blanks. Then, he said, “You’re sure you have no idea?”

“I’m very sure.” An infinite number of things could have gone wrong with this case.

He sighed, a flicker of disappointment coming into his eyes.

“Do you remember how you felt that night, Hailey? How it felt to go through the woods?” he asked.

The way he said it suggested that he knew.
