That’s not too bad for someone who’s not a great gardener and considering how little time we’ve spent tending the vegetable patches and orchard. I’m much encouraged.

We have much more planted out, on their way to being productive — cabbages and cauliflower, zucchini, more potatoes, limes, lemons, horseradish and artichokes. However, the kangaroos that jump the fences at night have attacked them. I expect they might recover as Robert has now fenced around them with loose chicken wire, which wildlife dislikes. I’d hoped to avoid this type of fencing because it could hardly be described as attractive, but it seems a necessity. They are not at all upset by us and certainly not Della. We seem to fascinate them, that’s all.

Robert was working in the shed a few nights ago and when he turned to glance over at the door a kangaroo was standing in the doorway, as calm as you please, watching what he was doing.

On the subject of animals,Tom and Della have at last come to an understanding. Tom has disliked Della on principle it seems and bosses her around terribly. In the evenings when Della pokes her nose inside the door,Tom soon sends her away with a scratch on it. The house is his domain, he’s obviously decided.

However, they really like the cooking-school arrangement — lots of pats and admiration from the lovely people who arrive. They have joined forces in this regard, Della waddling out to the carpark, tail wagging expectantly for pats or even, she hopes, food. Tom, not to be outdone, walks alongside and rolls on his back, looking extremely adorable and inevitably gets the desired belly rub and matching admiration.
