Chapter Ten – Ariella

I was surprised I made it to class on time, mostly because I didn’t sleep. Mrs. Lavel stood in the front of the padded room, and I kept my eyes averted from everyone as I walked in. Not many other students were here yet, and those that were stayed near their friends, only glancing at me as I entered.

I wanted to keep my head down, but Mrs. Lavel’s voice cut through the room: “Ms. Sallow, may I speak with you for a moment?”

Sighing, I nodded and moved closer to the teacher, to the woman whose wrinkly eyes seemed to stare right into my soul, seeing everything that happened yesterday even though it was the last thing I wanted her—or anyone—to know.

Mrs. Lavel took us out into the hall, away from the door. She stood near me, her gaze fixated on me behind her thin-rimmed glasses. Her greying hair was pulled back into a low bun today, tight, not a single flyaway to be seen on her head. “I heard what happened.”

I gulped. “How?” It wasn’t like I advertised what happened, unless DeRose already went to the headmaster… in which case, did every teacher know? Crap.

“I spoke with Kingsley this morning,” Mrs. Lavel said, folding her arms over her chest as she stared at me sternly. Other students funneled into her room behind us, and I was grateful she wasn’t mentioning any details. “He told me what transpired.” She paused, and I was in the process of losing my mind when she added, “How are you feeling now?”

Blinking at her, I was stunned. That wasn’t what I thought she was going to say. “I feel fine now, but… last night was a different story.”

She nodded, knowing all about it, apparently—much to my absolute mortification. “Be careful here. I have the feeling it might be only the beginning of someone trying to sabotage you and your endeavors.” Mrs. Lavel said nothing else, and I followed her back into her classroom, her words ringing in my head like an annoying echo that wouldn’t go away.

Well, wasn’t that just great?
