Chapter Sixteen

“How did it go?” Chase asked as he cleaned up his work area.

Lily stood in the doorway, still clutching her phone. There were circles under her eyes, and she looked like she hadn’t slept in days. It was obvious that the interaction with her ex had really sucked the energy right out of her. “It went okay. She asked me to send our custody agreement over so she’ll have it on record, and then she’s going to write an amendment agreement to send to his lawyer before he takes Evan to Tahoe.”

“What’s in the amendment?” Chase asked.

“Just stuff like how far in advance he needs to make arrangements to see Evan so that he can’t just call and demand we change our plans. And if he’s relocating, then we should set up a visitation schedule. She also wants to go after him for child support, but I don’t want to do that until after the visit.”

“Why not?” Chase asked, though he figured he already knew the answer.

“He said he’d pay me when he drops Evan off after the trip. But I won’t believe that until I see it. Mostly, I just don’t want to mess up the holiday for Evan.” She pressed a hand to her forehead. “You saw how excited Evan was when he saw his father. I can’t take that away from him.”

Chase nodded, though he was uneasy about the entire situation. He hated the way Sean treated them both and had doubts that the man had Evan’s best interest at heart. But Chase couldn’t say any of that. He was the newcomer to the picture and had to trust Lily’s judgment. He had no reason not to. She was a wonderful mother.

Lily turned and bumped into a tray on the counter, causing a fresh batch of pecan clusters to scatter all over the floor. “Ugh! I’m going to be a nervous wreck until Sean drops Evan off.”

Chase hurried over to help her. “It’s okay. It happens.”

“I know, but…” She pressed a hand to her heart. “I’m just stressed.”

“I know.” He took the remaining chocolates from her hands and said, “Why don’t you let me distract you while Evan is out with Sean? We could go to the holiday festival in the square.”

She let out an exaggerated sigh. “That sounds lovely, but I told Mr. Fredrick that I’d spend a little time working on the books over at his train store. Ever since he opened his brick-and-mortar store a few months ago, he’s needed some help keeping things organized.”

Disappointment wound through Chase, but he shoved it down. Now wasn’t the time to be thinking about his needs. All he wanted to do was lift Lily’s spirits. “Okay. I’ll walk you over there. I was going to look for a new train car for my set anyway.”

Lily nodded. “Okay.”

They finished cleaning up the shop, and after Chase locked up, they turned in the direction of the train store. It was only a few blocks down, making Chase wish it was further just so he could spend more time with Lily.
