âI think itâs the dumbest idea Iâve heard yet.â Ben wasnât trying to mask his anger. She was being impossible. Irresponsible. Putting her life in danger and maybe Charleneâs.
âBen, listen to me. The paper will support me. They want me to do this.â
âAnything for a story? Is that the mentality? No concern for your safety, no way to monitor your safety, just take your chances. Is this ego or a chance to help Charlene?â
âI think that stinks. You should know how I think by now.â
And, in fact, Ben thought he did, but to go undercover, pretend she was a runaway teen just to see if there was any information on Charlene ... Well, that was just too risky. Heâd shared Mollyâs information. Perhaps he shouldnât have. But Julie was a confidant, someone he hoped would be a lot more someday, and he valued her opinion. But not this, not putting her life in danger. Wasnât his biggest concern that he wouldnât be there to help?
âDid I lose you?â Julie was in her apartment in Albuquerque, sitting out the slick roads.
âSorry. I was just thinking.â
âThat could be dangerous.â
Even her attempt at humor didnât lighten his mood.
âI wonât stay out at night unless I have to.â She paused and he knew she wished she could take back that last part.
âWhat will you be looking for?â
âAnyone who has seen Charlene or knows where pregnant teens can go for help.â
âWhat are you going to wear?â
âBen, Iâm going to look like Iâm sixteen.â
âIâm thinking of bad pop singers, more skin than should be exposed at puberty.â
âBen, youâre not my mother.â
Not your mother and not someone who has been in your life long enough to give orders. He needed to back off. But, damn it, he cared about this woman and didnât want her to put herself in danger.
âI appreciate the caring. Honest. Iâll be careful.â
âDo you have your cell phone?â
âIâm not sure thatâs what all the chic down-and-outs own.â
âIf you get in trouble, what will you do?â
âI donât plan on getting in trouble.â
Famous last words, Ben thought, but said, âA person always needs an escape route.â
âI just donât know exactly what Iâll be doing. I thought Iâd try the clinic for the homeless first.â
âGood choice. Will you let someone know who you are?â
âNo. Iâm going to be a pregnant teen.â
âJulieââ
âBen, please, letâs just see what happens. Do you have a better idea?â
And, of course, he didnât. Would pregnancy have forced Charlene to run? Maybe. But he just didnât have a good feeling about finding her safe and now Julie ...
