Chapter Four

On Saturday afternoon, Dalton drove to Quint’s house on the outskirts of the city, his stomach clenched all the way. Though he had just spent over five hundred dollars on car repairs, his nine-year-old hunk of rusty metal scarcely sounded any better than when it had been towed to the mechanic.

As he drove down Quint’s street, he noticed this neighborhood was a far sight better than his own. Again he wondered about Quint’s attraction to him. It must be just a sex thing.

Fine. Dalton could handle that.

Quint’s house was the last on the dead end street. It was a hacienda style home with a cobbled walk and a couple of palm trees on the perfectly manicured front lawn. Driving up, he noticed a pool in the fenced-in back yard. Quint was in the driveway, shooting hoops. He wore sneakers, cutoff jeans and a black tank. Dalton’s heartbeat quickened at the sight of Quint’s gorgeous shoulders and arms. His muscles rippled as he tossed the ball at the net. He caught the ball and held it under his arm as he stepped aside and waved Dalton into the driveway.

Quint’s truck must be in the garage, Dalton thought and parked his car.

“Hey.” Quint approached, leaned in the driver’s side window and kissed Dalton’s mouth.

“Hi,” Dalton said and stepped out of the car. “Wow. You have a really nice place.”

“So far it’s been worth the mortgage payments,” Quint said.

“You live here alone?”

“Yep.”

“You don’t get lonely in a big house like this?”

“Nope.”

Dalton wasn’t sure he’d want to live alone in a big house. Being alone in his little apartment was fine, but a place like this…

Now sharing it with someone would be great, not that it would happen. He doubted Quint would ask him to move in and even if he did, Dalton couldn’t really afford to split the cost on this house.

Hold it.

His thoughts were running away with him. He and Quint were just dating. Blowing off sexual steam. Enjoying each other’s company. Even thinking about a commitment right now was crazy.

“Do you like to play?” Quint asked, holding up the ball.

“A little. I’m not very good at it.”

Quint tossed him the ball. Once in a while Dalton played with members of his foster family when he visited, but he wasn’t very sports-minded. He enjoyed exercise, but that was different.

After a few uncomfortable moments during which he mostly missed the net, he relaxed. Quint didn’t seem to care if he was a lousy shot. Once Dalton felt comfortable, he even played better. Soon he and Quint were laughing, shouting and roughhousing in a way that Dalton rarely experienced. As he jumped up to block Dalton’s shot, they crashed into each other and Dalton nearly hit the pavement. Quint grasped him upper arm and jerked him back to his feet.

“Sorry, man,” Quint said, smiling a bit, his blue eyes glistening. Sweat glazed his face and tendrils of dark hair from his ponytail clung to his neck in places. His wet tank molded to his gorgeous body and his nipples pressed against the thin fabric.
