The beef broth that Morgan had been looking for, of course, was on the top shelf and pushed towards the back. Fortunately, a man was coming around the corner that looked like he had limbs long enough to reach.

“Excuse me sir?”

He looked up and flashed her a smile. “Yes, beautiful?”

She’d never been openly hit on by this many white men when she lived in Florida. “Could you help me out? I’m trying to reach that reduced-sodium beef broth up there and it’s a bit far back.”

He reached up and easily grabbed the box. As he handed it to her, their fingers touched and he made a low noise in the back of his throat.

“I’m Ryan,” he said, sticking out his hand. “I noticed you earlier. You’re really beautiful.”

Morgan quickly shook his hand. “Thank you.”

“The man you were with, is that your husband?”

“Boyfriend.”

“Oh, good.” He stuck a hand in his pocket. “You know, you have gorgeous skin.”

Still confused about what was so “good” about her being unavailable, she replied with a curt, “Thank you.”

“I love women of color,” he added.

Morgan’s eyebrow shot up. Women of color?

“There’s just something exotic about you,” he went on. “You’ve got those full, kissable lips, amazing asses—”

“Thank you again, Ryan,” Morgan replied, holding up the box of broth. “But, I have to get going.”

He blocked her path. “Don’t go running away just yet. Don’t you want to stay and talk to me?”

“Not really.”

“That’s another thing about women of color that I like,” he declared. “You’re sassy. I like sassy. I don’t like women who’ll let me do whatever I want, whenever I want. I like being put in my place. Plus, I heard you guys can get pretty freaky in the bedroom and you know what they say about us white boys.”

He erotically flickered his tongue and with that, had crossed way over the line.

“I’m not interested, Ryan,” Morgan asserted. “Really, I’m good with what I have. Your comments are also inappropriate.”

Strangely enough, he didn’t seem at all fazed.

“Don’t be that way, beautiful,” he persisted. “Look, I don’t mean to offend you or anything, but I just want to see if what they say is true. That once you go black, you never go back. I’ve always been curious, but I’ve never really known how to approach a black chick before. Since you’re already here with a white guy, I figured that you’d at least give me a chance.”

Morgan made another attempt to walk past him, but again he blocked her path. Then, he had the audacity to wink. A perverted, lust-filled wink that instantly made her sick to her stomach. He was an ass, plain and simple, and she’d be willing to bet the rest of her savings that he acted the same way with every woman that crossed his path, regardless of her shape, relationship status, or complexion. The bigger the “challenge,” the better. This man was ignorance personified.

She tried one last time to be civil. “I don’t know what other way to tell you that I’m not interested.
