CHAPTER 8

Mason hadn't meant for the firefighters to see him at all, but he'd lost track of Sandy in the branches, and had crept out a little too far in search of her. Then he really was stuck, because although his bobcat correctly thought they could take a single man balanced on a ladder, Mason didn't want to start a manhunt. Or a cat hunt, he supposed, but either way, he didn't want it. Wild animal attacks were serious business, and without exposing himself, convincing anybody that there was not a dangerous bobcat on the loose would have been difficult, at best.

But out there on the branch, he'd seen past the fireman to the truck, where a kid of seven or so was sitting next to one Sandra Dawn Rutlidge, who had an enormous smile on her face and obviously not even the slightest hint of guilt anywhere in her entire soul.

A combination of tremendous relief and utter exasperation had flooded Mason. He hadn't thought for a moment Sandy was in danger, except maybe of letting everybody know she was a shifter. Seeing her on the ground, human, and in the company of someone at least nominally old enough to make sure she was okay swept all Mason's worries away.

Of course, now he was stuck up a tree with about a hundred people watching, and until Chrissy Sloan threw herself into the breach, he had no idea how he was going to get out of that. But enough people followed Chrissy to the tree box that he thought he could slide down into the crowd, transforming on the way, without being noticed.

And he was right. His first impulse was to let Chrissy know Sandy was okay, which was why he drew her to her feet and into his arms.

But then she was in his arms, and it felt so right that all Mason could do was sigh and very gently lower his forehead against her shoulder. Chrissy whispered, "Oh, thank goodness!" and hugged him with an unaffected joy that made his heart ache. It wasn't that he intended to reject her as a mate. It was just so much.

"Chrissy Sloan! What in Sam Hill do you think—" A tall man with a rough, raw ranginess thumped on the side of the tree box. "You could have gotten yourself killed, trying to go up a tree with a bobcat in it! I should arrest you for—"

"For tree-climbing?" Chrissy loosened herself from Mason's hug enough to smile up at him before she turned to the sheriff. She looked comfortable and confident as she faced the older man, amusement audible in her voice. "Look, it all turned out all right, Sheriff, so how about I promise to never climb the Christmas tree again and we let the fire department see if they can shake that bobcat out of the tree?"

"It's gone." The fireman on the ladder sounded baffled. "It's got to be in there somewhere, right? We've got to close the market until it we can get it checked out properly, Sheriff.
